For casual texts, wait at least a full day before you send a second message to a woman who has not answered. If your first message made a plan and the plan is soon, a few hours can be enough. There is no magic number, and the wait matters less than what your second text says. A text that moves things forward is fine. A text that asks for reassurance is the one that hurts.

What a double text actually is

A double text is a second message sent before she has answered the first. My advice on this is plain: avoid it if you can. Sending a follow up a few minutes after your first text can make it look like you sent the message, obsessed about it and sent another.

There is one exception he gives. If you send two ideas one right after the other, with no gap, that is not really a double text. It is one message split into two lines.

Why the clock feels so long

Most men ask how long to wait because the silence is hard to sit through. Five minutes of waiting feels like an hour. That is why the question feels urgent.

Her reality is different. She may be at work, driving, in a meeting or asleep. She may have seen your message and planned to answer later, then forgotten. Her day does not revolve around your text, and a long gap often means nothing at all.

The goal is to give her every real chance to answer before you speak again. A woman who wants to reply will usually do it on her own.

A simple rule of thumb by situation

Think in rough stages.

You just got her number or you are on the first messages. Give it a day, and often two. She is still deciding how she feels, and a quick second message can make you seem too eager.

You have been chatting for a few days. If the chat has been warm and she goes quiet, a full day is a fair minimum. Nothing is lost by waiting longer.

You made a plan and she has not confirmed. If the plan is for tomorrow or tonight, a short, clear follow up a few hours later is reasonable. "Still good for 7?" That is normal logistics.

You sent something that did not ask her anything. Leave it alone. There was nothing to answer, so silence is not a message.

These are guides, not laws. If you have a real reason, such as a time sensitive detail, send the text.

When a double text is fine

A second message works when it adds something. A few good reasons:

  • A change in the plan. "I can do 7:30 instead, if that works."
  • A small correction. "Meant to say Thursday, not Wednesday."
  • A new piece of information that moves things forward. "I got us a table for Friday."
  • A fresh, unrelated message after a decent gap. After a day or two, a light text about something new reads as a new conversation, not a chase.

In each case, the text gives her a simple thing to respond to.

When it hurts you

A double text turns needy when it tries to extract a reply. Avoid texts like these:

  • "Hello?"
  • "Did you see my message?"
  • "Are you ignoring me?"
  • "I guess you are busy."
  • "Wow, okay."

Each one mentions her silence, which puts pressure on her and shows that your mood depends on her answer.

It also goes badly when you send several in a row. One extra message will not wreck your chances. Three in an evening will.

Do not double text off a bad moment

If she gave a cold reply, said she was busy or turned down a plan, do not chase her with a follow up that tries to fix it. My rule is to avoid escalating from something negative. Let it rest, then start fresh later with something light.

If you get a "no" to a plan, a polite "no problem, let me know if things open up" is the end of it. Do not send a second invitation in a different form.

How many times is enough

One. If a woman has not answered your first message and one well chosen follow up, send nothing more. A third message does not make her warmer. It makes you easier to ignore.

If you still want to talk to her, wait a good while and open with something new, like a funny photo or a place you thought she would like. If that gets silence too, take the answer.

What to do while you wait

Do something that fills your time. Go to the gym, meet a friend, work on a project. The wait gets shorter when your attention is somewhere else, and a man with a full day is more attractive when she does reply.

The real aim is to stop treating each text as a test. A woman who is interested will find time to answer. If she does not, you will know in a day or two, and you can use your energy where it is wanted.
