There is no correct number of weeks, and anybody who hands you one is guessing. The question that actually answers it is simpler: what would you do with the attention if it arrived tomorrow?

If the honest answer is that it would prove something to you, wait. If the honest answer is that you are curious about somebody new, you are close enough to start.

Why do men go back too early

Because the first week alone is loud, and the apps are the fastest quiet available.

Nothing about that is shameful. Your life had another person in it every day, and now there is a gap where she was. At eleven at night, an app that produces instant attention is a reasonable thing to reach for.

The trouble is what it does to the next few months. Attention taken as medicine works for about four days and then stops, and by then you have spent your best first impressions on women you were not actually interested in.

The test: what would you use it for

Sit with the question properly rather than answering it fast, because the fast answer is always that you are fine.

Three answers mean wait. You want proof that somebody still wants you. You are measuring every new woman against the one who left. You are hoping she sees you on there.

Three answers mean go. Somebody caught your eye last week and you thought about saying something. You have started to find the empty evenings boring rather than painful. You can describe what went wrong in your last relationship in two calm sentences, without an argument in your voice.

You do not need all three. One of the second set, honestly held, is enough.

Three reasons to give it longer

The first is your own read on people. Straight out of something that ended badly, most men either see danger everywhere or nowhere at all, and both make for a poor first month.

The second is what you will talk about. There is a stage where the split is the most interesting thing that has happened to you, and it will come out on the date whether you planned it or not. That stage passes, and it passes faster if you are not spending every evening performing being fine.

The third is simple arithmetic. Your pictures are two years old and taken by her. Your written answers describe a life you were living with somebody else. Going back now means going back with the wrong material.

How to tell you are actually ready

Watch what you do rather than what you tell your friends.

You are ready when you can hear her name without the day changing shape. When you can think about her seeing somebody else and it is unpleasant rather than unbearable. When you have made plans for a weekend that have nothing to do with filling it.

A useful check: could you go on a first evening out and not mention her once, without it feeling like effort? If holding it in would take work, the work is not done yet.

What to fix before you go back on

Give yourself two weeks of preparation and you will skip most of the bad month.

Get new pictures taken. Not a project, just an afternoon with a friend who has a phone, in daylight, wearing clothes you own now. The set from your old life reads as your old life, and she can tell.

Rewrite what you say about yourself. What you wanted three years ago is probably not what you want today, and the old wording will keep attracting the old thing.

Then start on one app, not four. Ten quiet minutes a day. Going wide out of the gate is how men burn two weeks and conclude the whole thing is broken.

What not to say about your ex

Say the fact, skip the story. Separated last spring, together six years, ended reasonably. That is a complete answer and most women will move on from it.

What sinks a first evening is the detail. Who did what, what she said in the last argument, how unfair the whole thing was. Even when every word of it is true, the effect on the woman across the table is the same: she is now watching a man who is still in it.

The other trap is the opposite. Refusing to say anything at all reads as either something hidden or something raw, and an easy one-line answer avoids both.

Getting stuck halfway back

There is a state worth naming because a lot of men park in it. Active on the apps, talking to several women, never actually meeting anybody.

It looks like progress and it is not. It is company without risk, which is exactly what the medicine version of this offers, and it can run for months.

The fix is not more discipline about time spent. It is one specific invitation to one specific person this week. Meeting somebody, even badly, moves you out of it. Another fortnight of pleasant chat will not.
