First, admit what you actually want from the interaction, because most men who sabotage themselves want something other than the woman. They want to know that she likes them, and they get that proof the moment she smiles. Then they leave before the harder part begins, which is a kiss, a date or sex. Once you see that, the fix is practical: name your moves, make a few rules in advance, and get comfortable with the awkward parts.
What it looks like in the field
a dating coach describes watching students do the same few things again and again.
- A man has a lively talk with a woman, then walks off for no reason. She is looking back over her shoulder, and he is sure she was bored.
- A student asks for a number when sent back by his coach, and she hands it over happily. He had been certain she would say no.
- A man gets invited into a taxi at the end of a night and declines because it is probably nothing and it is far away.
- A man collects numbers and never calls any of them.
Each case looks like bad luck. In truth it is a decision, made quickly and without being noticed.
Why men do this
Look at the payoff. When a woman likes you, you feel better about yourself right away. That feeling is real and rare, so you protect it. Going further creates risk. She might reject the kiss, you might not know what to do next, or you might be bad in bed. Failing at those things hurts more than the pleasant moment you already have.
coach has said this about himself. As a teenager he wanted proof that girls liked him more than he wanted anything that came next. Once a woman invited him swimming, and he said no because he was uneasy about his body. Plenty of men recognize that.
Catch your own exits
You cannot change what you cannot see. For a month, after every outing, write down the exact moment each interaction ended and who ended it. Mark every time it was you.
You will start to see your personal list. Maybe you leave right after she laughs. Maybe you never ask for contact information with a woman who is clearly interested. Maybe you find a reason to cancel on every second date. That list is your map.
Make decisions before the moment
Your hesitation is strongest in the moment. So decide earlier.
- "If she is smiling and talking for two minutes, I ask for her number."
- "If she says she wants to go somewhere with me, I go."
- "If I get a number, I text within two days."
A rule like that removes a negotiation with your own nerves. You are not asking yourself whether this is a good idea. You are following a plan you made when you were calm.
Deal with the awkward bits directly
If part of the problem is that you are inexperienced with kissing or sex, that will get more awkward the longer you wait, not less. Nearly every man is clumsy at first. It is survivable, and women are usually kinder about it than men expect.
Take it in steps. Practice leading a kiss, practice being relaxed about your body, and practice talking about sex without turning red. Each uncomfortable first makes the next one smaller.
Watch the story you tell afterward
After a session, many men decide that the woman was not interested, without any evidence. Challenge it. What did she actually do? Did she keep talking, touch you, look back? If she was engaged and you left, call it by its name: you left.
Be kind about it, too. Beating yourself up trains the same avoidance.
Get someone to see it with you
Self-sabotage is hard to spot from inside, because it feels like good judgment. A coach in the field sees the exact second you drift toward the door and says so on the spot, when you can still change what you do.
That is the point of a Cold Approach Bootcamp in Miami or New York. You do the approaches with a coach next to you, and the moments you normally run from get caught and worked through while they are happening.
