Win the first reply, then suggest one specific place and day within a handful of replies, and swap numbers in the same message. Facebook Dating changes the order a little. You only get one message before she answers, so the asking cannot start until she has written back or liked you back. Once she has, ask the way you would on any dating app, and ask early.

Why the order is different here

Facebook Dating lets you write to a suggested woman by tapping one of her photos and sending a line. Facebook says that after that one message you cannot write again until she replies or likes you back.

The rule helps you more than it limits you, since it makes it impossible to keep pinging a woman who has not answered. It also settles what the first message is for. It is not the place to ask her out. Its only job is to earn a reply.

Her reply opens the chat, and from then on you are in an ordinary conversation inside the Matches tab, not Messenger.

Use what you share

Facebook Dating builds suggestions partly from Groups, Events, hometown and schools, so you often have something in common before you start. A shared group or school gives you a line without any effort, because it is true and specific.

If you share friends of friends, treat that as a reason to be polite and quick to take a no. Your behavior can travel, and a clean, relaxed ask is good for you.

How soon to ask

a dating coach's general approach is to get from a woman's first reply to her number and a plan in about four to seven messages, and each message has a purpose. You do not need to hit that number exactly. Read her replies.

Look for the first sign that she is putting effort in. Her replies get longer, she turns a question back on you, or she drops in a detail like a night she is free. Any of those means the door is open.

If she stays at one word a reply after a few tries, ask anyway. Twenty more messages will not warm up a chat that has been cold from the start, and a plain question gets you a clear answer either way.

Plant the plan before you ask

An invitation that lands out of nowhere can feel like pressure. Mention the idea of meeting early and lightly, tucked inside a joke, so that the real ask is not the first time she hears it.

Say she tells you she makes the best pasta in the city. You can answer that you would have to judge that in person. She either plays along or she brushes it off, and you find out which before you commit to asking.

What to write

Name a day, a spot and a length of time, and make it something she can agree to in a word. If she mentioned a bakery she likes, you might write, "I want to try that bakery you mentioned. Saturday morning, an hour, my treat?"

Skip the loose versions. "We should hang out sometime" gives her nothing to say yes to, and "what are you up to this weekend?" makes her build the plan herself. Keep the first meeting short and in a public place, which makes it easier for a woman to accept an invitation from someone she knows only through a screen.

When she accepts, ask for her number in that same reply. coach moves to numbers straight after the yes, because once the plan is in both phones it no longer depends on either of you opening Facebook.

Texting her from the app

If you got her number, the same rules apply to text. Keep messages short, one idea at a time, and do not double up when she is slow to answer. My rule is to avoid sending a second text just because the first one sat unread, since it looks needy, and to leave her plenty of time to reply.

Before the date, a short call or video chat helps. coach says it cuts down on no-shows and that women tend to arrive happier to see you.

If she does not answer

On Facebook Dating you only get one message before a reply, so a silent match is simply over. Do not look for another way to reach her, and do not hunt for her on Messenger. Move on to the next suggestion.

If she answered and then went quiet after you asked, wait a few days, send one light follow-up, and let it go if she does not reply. A man who accepts a no calmly is easy to say yes to the next time.
