A Compliment is Muzz's way of letting you message someone before you match. Without one, you cannot write to a woman you have not matched with. With one, your message goes to her straight away. The catch is that you can only send a follow-up once she accepts it. After she accepts, you are matched and can message freely. So a Compliment gets you one shot, and what you write in it decides whether there is a second.

The rules in order

Muzz's help pages set out how it works:

  • A Compliment sends a message immediately, with no waiting for a match.
  • A first message has a minimum length. Muzz sets one to encourage thoughtful introductions, so a single word will not send.
  • You cannot send a follow-up until the other member accepts the Compliment.
  • Once she accepts, you become a match and can message freely.

That third rule surprises men. They send a Compliment, get no answer, and write again. The app will not let the second one through, and it is better to understand why before you spend one.

Free Compliments and bought ones

Non-Gold members receive one free Compliment a month. Gold members receive one free Compliment a day and can buy extra credits.

Free daily Compliments expire at the end of the day, and the next free one arrives a day after the previous one is used. Compliments you purchase never expire.

The practical effect is that for a free member they are scarce, and for a Gold member they are plentiful enough to be tempting. Scarcity is a good thing for a man who writes carelessly, because it forces him to choose.

Who should get one

Spend a Compliment on a woman whose page gave you something real to respond to. A shared interest, a detail in a photo, something she wrote about what she wants. If you cannot name a specific reason you picked her, the credit is better kept.

Muzz members answer the questions about when they want to be married and how long they want to know someone, so a woman reading your message is thinking about whether you are serious. A Compliment that treats her as one of a list does the opposite of what you want.

How to write one

a dating coach's rule for a first line is to comment on something specific and make it easy to answer. On Muzz that is the entire job, because you have only the one message to make her want to accept.

Pick one thing from her page. Say something true about it in a sentence or two, add a light question, and stop. The minimum length is not a prompt to write an essay. It is a nudge away from "hi" and "hello" with nothing else.

Keep the tone respectful and plain. Skip flattery about how she looks, since a woman who is there for marriage reads that as shallow. Do not ask for her number, and do not argue with the way she has chosen to meet people. If she uses a chaperone or a nickname, that is how she does things and it costs you nothing.

Here is the shape, not a script to copy: a short remark about what she wrote on her page, then one question that takes a sentence to answer. Write your own, using your own words and her actual detail.

What to do after she accepts

Acceptance makes you a match, so you can talk freely. Do not waste that on a long wait. Write back soon, keep the exchange light, and keep your eye on the clock, because Muzz matches expire if neither person writes for a while.

When the conversation is warm, suggest a short call inside the app. My view is that moving to a call before a date makes plans far less likely to fall through, and Muzz lets members call without sharing a phone number. Let her set the terms.

If she does not accept

A Compliment can go unanswered, and that tells you very little about you. She may not have opened the app, she may be picking carefully, or she may simply not be interested. Do not send a second Compliment to the same woman, and do not take it personally.

Count your results over a couple of weeks: how many Compliments sent, how many accepted, how many turned into a call. If acceptance is low, the weak part is usually the photo she sees first or the opening line, both of which you can fix without paying for more credits.

Are they worth buying

For most men, only after the free ones have taught you something. Use your monthly Compliment on a woman you have read carefully, see how it lands, and adjust. If your Compliments are getting accepted and you simply want more of them, extra credits are a fair purchase. If they are not, more credits will only repeat the result faster.
