Yes, and the reason is unglamorous: the apps are grading your pictures, not your bone structure. An ordinary-looking man with a good set does better than a good-looking man with a bad one, and that happens constantly.

That is the whole opportunity. Most men never touch the part they could change, so the bar you are clearing is lower than it looks.

What the apps are actually judging

She is not assessing your face in isolation. She cannot: she has never seen it. She is assessing a small stack of images and deciding what kind of man is behind them.

That decision is built out of things that have almost nothing to do with genetics. Whether the light is any good. Whether your clothes fit. Whether you look comfortable being looked at. Whether there is anybody else in your life. Whether you seem like a man having a decent week.

A handsome man can fail all five of those and get very little. An ordinary man who passes them all reads as attractive, because attractive in this context means the whole impression, not the jawline.

Where the average-looking man loses

Run through most ordinary men's sets and the same five faults turn up.

Bad light, usually indoors at night, which hollows out a face and ages it. A crop so tight there is nothing but head, which reads as a passport photo. Everything two or more years old, so the clothes and the haircut date it. A group shot in the lead slot, so she cannot tell which one you are and does not try. And the same expression, in the same room, five times.

None of that is about looks. All of it is fixable in an afternoon, and that is the point.

Pictures on the apps get read in under a second

She is making a decision faster than she could describe one, and she is making it hundreds of times an evening.

That speed changes what matters. A clear picture beats a fancy one. A sharp, well-lit shot taken on a phone outdoors will beat an expensive portrait where your face is half in shadow, every time, because hers is a glance and not a study.

It also means the first image carries nearly all the weight. If it does not work, the rest of the set is never seen. Men spend their effort on slots two through six and wonder why nothing changes.

Fix the lead shot before anything else

One picture, and it has one job: a clear look at your face, alone, in good light, with something like a real expression on it.

Outdoors in the hour before sunset does most of the work for free. Shot from slightly above eye level, from a few steps back with the camera zoomed a little rather than pushed into your face. No sunglasses, no hat, no group, no one cropped out of the side.

Get somebody to take thirty and pick one. The difference between the first frame and the twentieth is usually the whole difference between the man who gets nothing and the man who does fine.

The rest of the set

Four or five is plenty, and each one should answer a different question.

One full-length, because she will look for it and its absence is louder than an average body. One with other people in it, so she can see you are not alone in the world. One that shows something you actually do on a weekend. One where you are laughing at something rather than posing.

Different days, different clothes, different places. A set that clearly came from a single afternoon reads as a single afternoon, and she notices that without thinking about it.

What honest looks like

There is a line between showing yourself on a good day and showing a man she will not recognise.

Good day is legitimate and it is what everybody is doing. Better light, clothes that fit, standing properly. She is doing the same thing and neither of you is lying.

What is not legitimate is anything she could measure and find wrong when you walk in. Heavy filtering, a five-year-old picture, a body angle that hides something she will see in the first five seconds. Those do not win you anything. They move the disappointment from the screen to the table, which is worse for both of you.

What changes once the pictures are right

Expect the change to be larger than seems reasonable, and expect it to arrive quickly.

The men who go through this usually describe the same thing. The volume goes up, and more importantly the kind of woman writing back changes, because a set that shows a real life attracts people who want a real life.

Then the rest of it is on you. Answer properly, ask sooner, meet within a week or so. Your looks stop being the variable almost immediately. It was mostly the pictures the entire time.
