You can reduce approach anxiety on your own, and the first steps are free. The trouble is that practice alone has three weak spots: you choose steps that are too big or too small, you cannot see what you do in the moment, and you decide for yourself when to stop. A coach standing beside you covers all three.

This article covers what you can do alone, where it stalls, and what a coach changes.

What to know first

  • Approach anxiety is the knot in the stomach and the blank mind when you see a woman you want to meet.
  • Practice is the cure, and a ladder of small steps works. Many men build one themselves.
  • Solo practice breaks down at three points: sizing the step, seeing yourself, and quitting early.
  • A Cold Approach Bootcamp puts a coach beside you for two four-hour blocks a day. Approach anxiety is its specialty.
  • No prior experience is required.

What you can do alone

a dating coach's own method for approach anxiety is a ladder, and you can start it today.

Change what counts as a win. "If instead, your criteria for a good approach is: physically walk up to a girl and utter a sound. That's something anyone can do."

Climb in small steps. He calls it progressive desensitization and lays it out in four challenges. Challenge one is to walk up to a woman and make a sound, then leave. Challenge two is to ask for directions: "Hey, quick question, do you know where the best coffee shop around here is?" Challenge three is to ask for an opinion. Challenge four is a compliment and an introduction. Why it works, in his words: "Progressive desensitization works like a charm for approach anxiety because it very rapidly gives your brain evidence that talking to girls isn't really that scary."

Set a daily floor. "I set a rule: three approaches a day, every day. No exceptions."

If you follow only this, you will probably improve.

Where practice alone stalls

You pick the wrong step size. On your own, the step is whatever you decide it is. A step that is too big, like opening a woman in a crowded bar, makes you retreat. A step that is too small, repeated for months, keeps you comfortable and stops the progress. A coach watches you and adjusts the step so it stays slightly uncomfortable.

You cannot see yourself. After an approach you remember what you said. You do not see the rest, and a coach can:

  • The hesitation before you walked over
  • Your energy when you opened
  • Whether you were listening or planning your next line
  • Whether the conversation was an interview
  • Whether she showed interest and you missed it

a dating coach says: "A mentor or coach can save you YEARS of frustration and mistakes just by looking at you in action. Sometimes major mistakes you're making in field can be corrected with literally one comment."

You end the session early. At the edge of an approach, the loudest voice is your own. It says: not this one, she looks busy, next time. Alone, you can listen to it for months. Next to a coach, the answer to "why didn't you go?" has to be said out loud, and the next approach is usually only seconds away.

What a coach beside you changes

A Cold Approach Bootcamp is built around those three weak spots.

The step is sized for you. Your coach starts with where you are. A man who cannot walk up gets a smaller target. A man who walks up and runs dry works on the first thirty seconds of the conversation.

Someone sees what you cannot. Your coach watches each approach and tells you what he noticed before you go again. You get the one-comment fix while the moment is fresh, not a week later in a recap.

You do more repetitions in a short time. Each training day has two four-hour blocks, and Group is 24 hours across three days. a dating coach describes how he opens a Bootcamp: "We started the bootcamp like we usually do, doing a large volume of approaches to melt away that approach anxiety."

You leave with a plan. Every student gets a short written practice plan: what is working, what needs attention, and what to focus on when he goes out again. It turns the Bootcamp into a routine you can run without a coach.

Group or Private for approach anxiety

Group has up to three students per coach. You get feedback on your own approaches and see the coaching the others receive. Private is one coach for you alone, for one, two or three days. If being observed by other men makes the anxiety worse, Private takes that away. Group or Private Dating Bootcamp: Which Should You Book? compares them.

What coaching does not do

Coaching trains a skill. It does not remove the nerves forever, and it does not promise a result. a dating coach's line is a fair expectation: "The funny thing about Approach Anxiety is that it usually goes away as soon as you approach." The nerves shrink with repetition, and they can come back after a long break.

If your anxiety reaches well beyond meeting women, such as work, friendships or daily life, a licensed professional is the right person to talk to as well.

Questions men ask

Can I get rid of approach anxiety without a coach?

Many men reduce it alone with a ladder of small steps. A coach adds the sizing of each step and catches the mistakes you cannot see.

What if I cannot make myself approach at the Bootcamp?

Your coach starts there. What If I Freeze at a Dating Bootcamp? walks through a first day.

Do I need a coach for the first step?

No. Walking up and saying "Hey" is a first step you can take today. The approach anxiety page has more on getting started.

What happens after the Bootcamp?

You keep your written plan and access to the community Slack. The package has no follow-up call. If you want a coach reviewing your progress, look at the Mentorship.
