Why Won't Hinge Selfie Verification Work?

Hinge's own troubleshooting points at the photos on your page. Your photos, and above all your clearest face shot, should have no other people in them and a plain-colored wall behind you. They need no filters and no sunglasses, with your whole face and head in frame and you facing straight ahead. Each one also has to be an original, not a photo of a photo. Hinge Support cannot verify you by hand, so if your photos meet every one of those points and it still fails, contact Support.

Selfie Verification compares the video you record with the photos already on your page. The video is only half of the test. If the photos give it nothing clear to compare against, a perfect video will not get you through.

That is why the fix almost always starts with your photo set rather than with a second attempt at the selfie. Men often record the video five times in a row, hoping the next take works. It rarely helps. Change the photos first, then record again.

Hinge's first point is that your photo should not include any other people, and that includes the background.

This catches more men than anything else. The photo where you look best is often from a wedding or a night out, with friends at your shoulder and strangers behind you. To you it is obviously a photo of you. To a face check it is a photo of several faces.

Cropping your friends out rarely solves it, because a tight crop tends to leave half a face at the edge or cut into your own head. It is easier to take a fresh solo photo.

The next points are about what surrounds your face. A plain-colored wall behind you works best. A busy street, a loud wallpapered bar or a crowded beach gives the check more to sort through.

Distance matters too. If you are a small figure in a wide shot of a mountain, there is not enough face to work with. Your face should take up a good share of the frame.

The image also has to be crisp. A blurry night shot, a heavily zoomed photo or a picture saved and resent until it went grainy can all fail for that reason alone.

Filters are out. That covers the obvious ones, like a dog-ears overlay or a black and white effect, and it is safest to assume skin-smoothing and beauty modes count as well.

Sunglasses are out too, even good ones. So is anything that crops part of your face or head, like a frame that cuts off your chin or the top of your head. And you need to be facing the lens directly, not in profile and not looking off to the side for a moody shot.

The last point trips up men with older photos. Hinge wants the original image, not a copy made by photographing a print or another screen.

If the only good photo of you is a printed one that you snapped with your phone, or a shot you photographed off another screen, it will not count. Use the original file, or take a new photo.

Sometimes a man checks every point and verification still will not go through. At that stage, Hinge says to contact Support.

Know what Support can and cannot do. For security reasons, Hinge's support staff cannot manually verify a photo for you. Writing to them is still the right step, but the check itself has to pass on its own.

Once it does work, go easy on changing your photos straight afterwards. Hinge bases verification on the photos on your page when you verify, and changing them later may cost you the badge.

It is fair to wonder whether all this is worth the trouble. For most men it is.

Women on the apps are cautious about fake accounts and about photos that turn out to be old or edited. A verified badge answers that worry before she has to think about it. As she weighs up your like, the badge gives her one small reason to trust what she sees.

The fixes help you twice, too. The photo verification wants, a clear, recent, solo shot of your face in good light, also makes an excellent first photo. Take it once and you walk away with a stronger lead image and a badge from the same afternoon.
