Travel Mode usually fails for one of four reasons, and until it works you will not see matches from the city you are heading to. The app may not offer it, you may be missing the paid tier it needs, the place you picked may be unavailable, or your phone's location may be wrong. Work through them in that order. The first two take a minute to check.

Does your app have it?

Not every dating app has a travel mode, and the ones that do call it different things.

Bumble has Travel Mode. Tinder has Passport. Hinge's help page describes changing your own location pin and does not describe a travel mode. If you are on Hinge, there is no switch to look for, and it is the app that explains why you cannot find one.

Do you have the right tier?

On Bumble, Travel Mode needs Premium or Premium+. If you are on a free account, the option will not work for you. Check your subscription before anything else, and read what your tier includes on the purchase screen.

Tinder's Passport needs a subscription or a standalone purchase. Tinder also says Face Check may be required in some regions before you can use it. If Passport will not switch on, check whether the purchase went through, and complete any face check it asks for.

Neither of these is a bug. They are rules about who can use the feature, and the app is working as designed.

Is the place available?

Bumble says a location you used before may be unavailable if the service no longer operates there. If a city you picked on an earlier trip is missing, that is the reason. Choose a place from the options it does offer.

Also remember how the feature works. Bumble's Travel Mode shows you profiles from the place you pick for a set period, and it does not change your GPS. You appear in one location at a time, and you can turn it off or change it in your settings.

Is your location wrong?

If everything else is right and the matches still look like they are in the wrong city, look at the location signal itself. Bumble lists a VPN, Wi-Fi routing and an old app version as reasons the location can be wrong.

Run these checks in order:

  1. Allow location access for the app in your phone's settings.
  2. Switch off any VPN.
  3. Try mobile data instead of Wi-Fi, since some networks route through a different place.
  4. Update the app and restart the phone.

Open the app after each step so you know which one fixed it.

Which app suits a trip

If you travel often and care about arranging dates in other cities, Bumble's Travel Mode and Tinder's Passport are the two built for it. Both cost money, and neither promises replies. A paid tier gets you in front of women in the place you chose, and the rest is down to your photos and your first message.

If you are on Hinge, you have no travel switch. Change your location pin to where you will be only when you are really there, and talk to women in your own city until then.

What not to do

Do not look for a trick to make the app think you are somewhere you are not. A fake location is a way to deceive the women you are matching with, and it breaks the app's rules. It also leads to a bad first date, because the woman expects a man who lives nearby.

Travel Mode exists as the honest way to do this. Use it for what it is for, and let it label you as a visitor. Being open about it is a feature, because it gives you a clear reason to meet.

Start swiping and messaging before you travel

Start before you travel. If you will be in a city next weekend, switch on Travel Mode a few days ahead, so you have time to chat and line up plans. Put your dates in your first messages: "I am in town Friday to Sunday" gives a woman a reason to answer soon and a deadline for the plan.

Do not wait until you land to start swiping. A man who arrives with no conversations going spends the weekend alone, and a man who arrives with two or three plans half made has real choices.

If none of it works

Check the app's own help center for the feature, and contact support with a short, clear note about what you did and what you saw. Say which app, which tier and which place. That is far more useful than a note that says it is not working.

If the feature is simply not available where you are, plan the old way. Message matches in your own city, suggest a plan for when you arrive, and keep your own location set to where you really are.
