Why Did Your Boost Not Get You Any Matches?

A Boost only raises how often your profile is seen, and Tinder says outright that it does not promise a match. When one comes back empty, look at two things first: whether you were swiping while it ran, and whether your photos were earning likes before you paid to show them to more women.

Tinder describes a Boost as a way to get your profile viewed far more often for a short stretch of time, and a Super Boost as a much bigger version of the same thing. Both change how many women see you.

Neither one changes what they see. The same photos, the same bio and the same first impression go out to a bigger audience, and each woman decides the way she would have decided anyway. That is why Tinder is careful to say that neither feature promises a match. What you pay for is more women looking, and nothing about whether they like what they see.

Tinder's own instruction is to activate the Boost and then start swiping to see results.

Men skip this constantly. They tap the lightning bolt, put the phone in a pocket and check back later. A Boost is a short window, and a man who is not in the app during it is not liking anyone back while more women are seeing him.

So pick your moment before you press it. A quiet evening on the sofa with half an hour to spare works. A queue at the coffee counter does not.

Tinder marks any match you make during a Boost with a purple lightning bolt icon by her name. Scroll through your list and look for it.

If you see the bolt beside a name or two, the Boost worked, just not by much. If you see it nowhere, the Boost brought nothing. Either way you now have a number, and a number is more useful than a feeling that it was a waste of money.

Compare it with an ordinary evening. If a normal night gets you two matches and a Boost night gets you three, the Boost is doing a small amount of work on top of a thin base. If a normal night gets you none, the problem started well before you pressed the button.

There is a simple way to put this. Most paid features on the apps are multipliers, and multiplying good results is well worth the money. But a million times zero is still zero.

If your profile gets almost no likes on an ordinary night, a Boost shows that same profile to more women and gets you more of almost nothing. So make sure you are getting at least some matches without paying before you pay for anything.

There is a second reason an early Boost can disappoint. My reading is that Boosts work better as the app starts to rate your profile more highly, so a new or struggling profile may need several before one really lands. Treat your first empty Boost as a reading on your profile, not a verdict on the feature.

Photos do most of the work, so start there. Lead with a clear, recent photo of your face taken in daylight. Follow it with photos of you somewhere real, doing something, with nobody else in the frame competing for attention.

Then test your changes in a way you can measure. Track your likes and matches for a week, swap in one new photo, and compare the next week against the same days. Changing one photo at a time is the only way to know which change helped. I treat one or two good matches per Boost as the sign of a strong profile, which gives you a fair target to aim for.

Once ordinary nights bring in some matches, a Boost finally has something to multiply.

A match made during a Boost is a woman who was in the app a few minutes ago. That is the easiest moment there is to start a conversation.

Answer within minutes if you can. Keep the first line short and make it about her. Pick one detail from her photos or her bio and say something only she could answer. A good Boost with no follow-up is the same as an empty one.

A Boost buys more views, and the matches still depend on your photos and on you being there. Swipe while it runs, check for the purple lightning bolt to see what it brought, and get your free nights working before you pay to multiply them. When it does bring matches, answer them while she is still in the app.
