Because recording the selfie is only half of it. Tinder gives you the Photo Verified badge only when two things are true. Your video has to pass the liveness check, which confirms a real, live person recorded it. The two things the badge needs

Tinder is specific about this. You receive the badge if you pass the liveness check and your photos contain a clear solo face photo that matches the face in your video selfie.

The liveness check is about the video. Tinder's facial scanning confirms the video was taken of a real person and was not digitally altered or manipulated.

The face match is about your photos. The same technology detects your face in the video and in your photos and compares the two. If none of your photos shows your face clearly, on its own, there is nothing for the video to match, however good the video was.

When the video itself does not pass

Sometimes the problem really is the recording. Tinder lists the common reasons a Photo Verification submission is turned down:

  1. Your face is not prominent in the frame.

  4. The video is too dark or unclear.
  5. The person in the video does not look like the person in your photos.

The first four are easy to put right. If capturing the video goes wrong more than once, Tinder says you can exit the verification flow and start it again.

When your photos are the problem

Look at your set the way the check does. Is there at least one photo where you are the only person in it, your whole face is visible, and it looks like you now?

Here are the photos that fail this without men noticing:

  • Every photo is a group shot, so there is no solo face at all.
  • The only solo photo has sunglasses, a hat brim or a hand across the face.
  • The solo photo is five years old, or filtered until your skin looks like plastic.
  • Your face is small in the frame, on a summit or across a room.

Add one clear, recent photo of you alone, face fully visible, then run verification again. Put that photo near the front of your set. It will do more work there than anywhere else.

Adding or deleting photos after you verify

Once you have the badge, it is tied to your photos. Tinder says you may need to go through verification again if you delete one or more of your photos, and any new photo you add is subject to continued checking, which can affect your status.

So when you refresh your set, keep your clear solo face photo in it. Swap the others around it rather than replacing everything at once.

A solo photo that does more than pass

Passing is the minimum. The same photo can also be your strongest one.
