Because Match only lets members sign in from Canada and the United States. Once you are outside those two countries, you will not be able to log in, on the app or on the site, until you are back. Match also tells U.S. members who are abroad to use us.match.com, so they are not sent to the local Match site for the country they are visiting.
Sign-in only works in two countries
Match limits sign-in to Canada and the United States. When it will not let you in on a trip, the fault is not your phone, your password or your account. It is where you are standing.
So there is no point spending the first evening of a trip on password resets or reinstalling the app. None of that changes the country you are in. The sign-in works again once you are back in either of the two.
The useful thing to take from this is that it is predictable. You know before you board the plane that Match goes quiet for the length of the trip, which means you can plan for it instead of finding out at the hotel.
The local site you may land on
Match runs sites for other countries too, and when you are abroad you can find yourself sent to the one for the country you are visiting. Match's advice for U.S. members is to go to us.match.com instead, so you are not redirected.
Keep the two facts separate. The address keeps you off the wrong local site. The two-country rule still decides whether you can sign in at all.
Before you leave
Because Match will be out of reach for the whole trip, the week before you go matters more than the trip itself.
Open every conversation and answer anyone who is waiting on you. Then pick out the two or three that are going well, the ones where she asks you questions back. Those are the ones to protect.
a dating coach puts the most common way these conversations end very simply. A man sends a message, it goes completely dead, and that is the end of it. A week or two of silence from you looks exactly like that unless you say otherwise.
Telling her you are away
So say otherwise, plainly, before you go. Tell her where you are going, roughly how long for, and that you would like to see her when you are back.
A trip is also good material. It is a real thing happening in your life, and it gives her something easy to ask about. "Off to Lisbon for ten days, taking recommendations" is a better message than another round of how her week is going.
If a plan is close, make it now. Something like "I'm away for ten days. Drinks the Thursday after I'm back?" gives her a date to hold onto and a reason to reply. A conversation that ends with a plan on the calendar survives a trip. One that ends with "talk soon" usually does not.
Dating on the trip itself
If you want to date while you are away, Match is not the tool for it outside the two countries. Other dating apps may work where you are going, and you can use one there for the length of the trip.
If you do, be straight about it. Say in your first message that you are visiting, and for how long. A woman who knows you fly home on Sunday can decide for herself whether a drink on Friday appeals. A woman who only finds out on the date feels misled, and she is right to.
Picking up where you left off
Sign in as soon as you are back home. Answer anyone who wrote while you were away first, then go back to the conversations you paused.
Do not restart them as though nothing happened. You told her you were traveling, so use it. One line about something you saw or ate, then the plan you already floated. A conversation that ended on "see you when you're back" is still warm, and it is the easiest date you will book all month.
If you are abroad often
If you spend long stretches outside Canada and the United States, every one of those weeks is a week Match cannot be used. Plan your conversations and your dates around the time you are home.
It is also worth a moment before you buy a long plan. Count how much of it you will actually spend in the two countries where you can sign in, and choose the length with that number in mind.
