Take her somewhere close, quiet and easy to leave. In Brooklyn that usually means a calm bar with room to talk, a cafe or a bench with a coffee, chosen within a few minutes of where you met. The place matters less than the invitation: you ask a woman you just met to spend a short, low-pressure stretch of time with you, and the setting should keep it that way. A man who does not drink can pick any of these and order something else.
What to know first
- Keep it close, ideally within a few blocks, so she is not committing to a trip.
- Pick a place where you can hear each other, which rules out loud, packed rooms.
- Offer a short plan: one drink or one coffee, then see how it goes.
- Drinking is optional. Coffee, tea and soda work as well, and a woman will rarely care what you order.
- Venues in New York change fast, so choose a type of place, not a fixed address, and check hours before relying on one.
Why spontaneous works
A spontaneous invitation works because it is small. You met her a few minutes ago, and you are asking for a short time, not an evening. She does not have to dress up, plan or explain anything to anyone, and she can say yes without taking a risk.
a dating coach talks about turning an approach into a date on the spot when the timing allows, and the same idea applies: the sooner you move from a conversation to a shared drink, the less time she has to reconsider. Read what she is doing first. If she is hurrying or meeting someone, ask for her number and part on a friendly note instead.
Picking the kind of place
Choose from types, not names.
A calm bar. Look for one that is busy enough to feel lively and quiet enough to talk. Weeknight afternoons and early evenings are easier than weekend nights, when many Brooklyn bars are loud. Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Park Slope and Fort Greene each have rooms that fit.
A cafe. A cafe works at any hour it is open, and it fits a woman who does not want alcohol or is not sure about you yet. It is also a good choice if you do not drink.
A park or waterfront. On a nice day, you can buy a drink and walk to a bench or lawn. Brooklyn Bridge Park, McCarren Park and Prospect Park are spots where people already linger, so it feels natural.
A place she names. If she suggests somewhere, go with it. She knows what she likes, and agreeing is the easy part.
Avoid anywhere with a long line, a cover charge or a crowd. If the first fifteen minutes are spent shouting over music, the setting works against you.
How to ask
Make the invite short and specific:
- "I would love to keep talking. There is a quiet place around the corner. Want to grab one drink?"
- "I have to head that way anyway. Want a coffee or a drink on the way?"
- "I am going to get a drink right here. Come with me for one."
Notice that each one names a short plan and a nearby place. None of them asks her to give up her whole evening.
If she says she cannot right now, take her number and suggest a time. If she says yes, walk to the place together. Keep the talk going along the way so there is no pause for second thoughts.
If you do not drink
You do not need alcohol to ask a woman out for a drink. Say "grab a drink" and order a soda, a tea or a coffee when you arrive. Most women will not mention it, and if she does, a calm "I am not drinking tonight" is enough. a dating coach talks about drinking as a tool some men lean on, and the better skill is being comfortable without it. The article how to successfully date women sober goes further. If a venue serves only alcohol, switch to a cafe.
What to do once you are there
- Sit where you can both see the room, ideally side by side or at a corner of the table.
- Let her order first, and offer to pay for the first round.
- Keep talking about what you were already talking about, and ask about her.
- Check the mood after the first drink. If it is going well, you can suggest staying. If it is not, thank her and leave.
- End on a high note, and say you would like to see her again.
Why it takes practice
The hard part is not finding the place. It is saying the sentence, in the moment, to a woman you met a few minutes ago. That is a skill, and it improves with real repetitions. On a Cold Approach Bootcamp in New York, you spend two four-hour blocks a day in the field with a coach who watches your approaches and corrects them live. Numbers and dates is one of the four parts each training day covers, including recognizing when an immediate date makes sense.
Group has no more than three students per coach, and Private is fully one-on-one for one, two or three days. Both are in the field and both welcome beginners. Group or Private compares them.
Questions men ask
Is getting drinks a date?
It can be.
What if she says no to a drink but yes to coffee?
Take the coffee. The format does not matter.
Should I ask on the spot or take her number first?
If she has time and the conversation is warm, ask on the spot. If she is rushing, take her number.
