Say something about the party you are both standing in: how she knows the host, the music, the line for the bathroom. Then listen to her answer and build your next line from it, instead of reaching for a script. When you are approaching a girl at a house party, the words matter far less than saying them like you are glad to be there. Below are lines that work at the start, in the middle, when you want her number, and the day after.
Your first line: use what is in front of you
A party hands you an opener the moment you walk in. You share a host, a room, a playlist and a drinks table, so you never need to invent a reason to talk.
The best first lines are small and true. They ask nothing personal and need no cleverness. Say one with a smile, look at her while you say it, and then stop talking so she can answer.
Openers that fit a party
Pick one and change it to fit what is actually happening:
- "How do you know Sam? I am trying to figure out which half of the room is from his work."
- "Be honest. Is this the good corner of the party or the bad one?"
- "Did you make the guacamole? Somebody needs to take credit for it."
- "I have been told you are the person to ask about this playlist."
- "Hi, I am Alex. I realized I have walked past you three times and never said hello."
The last one is direct, and direct is fine at a party. Everyone there half expects to meet someone new.
What to say when she is with friends
If she is in a small group, say your first line to all of them. Look around the circle as you talk. Ask the group something they can argue about, like where they are going after or whose idea it was to come.
Once they are laughing, turn to her with a question that is only for her. "Wait, you did not answer. How do you know Sam?" moves the talk to the two of you without shutting anyone out.
What to say after she answers
This is where most men run dry, because they prepared an opener and nothing after it.
Your next line should come from her last one. If she says she knows the host from college, ask what he was like back then. If she says she just got back from a trip, ask what the best part was. Mix in statements too. "You look like you were the responsible one in college" gives her something to push back on, which keeps her talking more than a question does.
Men on Reddit who answer this question keep saying the same few things: do not fire questions one after another, do not just bounce her own questions back at her, and keep your stories short. When she asks about you, answer in a sentence or two, add one interesting detail, and hand it back.
Lines that fall flat
Some things sound fine in your head and land badly in a kitchen full of people:
- Pickup lines. She has heard them, and they tell her you came with a script.
- Comments about her body. Save compliments for things she chose, like her jacket or her laugh.
- The interview: job, neighborhood, hometown, rapid fire.
- Complaining about the party. It makes you the guy who brings the room down.
What to say to get her number
When the talk is good and you have shared a laugh or two, ask before the energy dips. Be plain about it:
- "I have to go find my friend, but I want to see you again. Put your number in."
- "You should come to the thing I mentioned on Saturday. What is your number?"
Hand her your phone with the new contact screen open. If she types it in, smile, say you will text her, and go back to the party for a bit. Leaving the conversation on a high point does more than hovering until she leaves.
What to say to a girl after a party
Text her the next day, not at three in the morning. Remind her who you are and bring back something from your talk:
- "Hey, it is Alex from Sam's party. Still thinking about your guacamole defense."
- "Alex here, from last night. Did you ever make it to the after party?"
Then suggest something specific, like a drink on Thursday. Keep it to one or two texts. If she answers warmly, set the plan. If she does not answer, let it go.
Saying it out loud, with someone watching
Lines on a screen are easy. Saying one to a woman you like, while her friends watch, is the hard part, and it only gets easy with practice.
