The funniest things to say when approaching a girl come from the moment you are both in, not from a joke you memorized. A playful comment about the line you are standing in, the dog on the corner or the drink in her hand beats any prepared line. It is real, and she can tell. Say it lightly, smile, and let her answer.
If you searched for funny lines or funny things to tell a girl, the short version is the same. Make it about the situation. Keep it kind. Never make her the target.
Why prepared jokes fail
A joke from a list sounds like a joke from a list. She can hear that the sentence was ready before she showed up, and the comedy dies because there is nothing in it about her or the moment.
It also puts you on a stage. You are performing, and she has to decide whether to laugh. A real comment about something you both see costs her nothing to answer.
a dating coach says the same line works or fails on delivery, and that it is "not a line that you use, it's an attitude that you use." A funny line in a flat, nervous voice does not land. A plain observation in a relaxed one does.
Funny things to say about the moment
The easy source of humor is whatever you both can see:
- In a slow line: "I think we are both going to retire before this moves."
- At a cafe: "I have been staring at the menu for five minutes. Are you the type who orders the same thing every time?"
- With a dog nearby: "That dog looks like he runs the place. Does he pay rent?"
- At a crowded bar: "I am impressed you found a spot. Did you fight someone for it?"
None of these needs a punchline. Each one is a small, friendly exaggeration that invites her to play along.
Light teasing that works
Teasing is humor aimed at her, and it is easy to get wrong. It works when it is about something harmless that she chose, and when your tone shows you like her.
- She orders an enormous coffee: "That is a serious commitment. Rough day or ambitious day?"
- She says she is a terrible cook: "So the smoke alarm is your dinner bell."
- She admits she is always early: "You must be exhausting to be late for."
The recipe is simple: pick something she volunteered, exaggerate it a little, and smile. Then ask a real question so she can answer.
What not to tease
Leave out her looks, her body, her job title, her family and anything she seems sensitive about. Teasing that finds a sore spot is just an insult with a smile on it, and it ends the conversation.
If she looks uncomfortable after a joke, drop it and move on: "Fair enough, I will stop." That reads as confidence, not weakness.
Laughing at yourself
The safest humor is about you. A small, self-aware comment shows you are relaxed:
- "I have rehearsed three openers on the way over, and forgotten all of them."
- "I am terrible at this, but I did not want to walk past without saying hi."
Say it with a smile, not an apology. It tells her you are a normal person who took a small risk, and many women find that more attractive than polish.
Keep it moving after the laugh
Making her laugh is a good start and a poor finish. After she smiles, follow what she says. Pull one detail from her answer, respond to it, and add something of your own.
A man who delivers one good joke and then runs out of conversation ends up with a laugh and no number. A man who keeps listening gets the next ten minutes.
When nothing lands
Some jokes get a polite smile. That is not a failure. You said something friendly to a stranger, and she heard it. Move to a simple question or a goodbye.
The way to get better is repetition. You find out which of your own jokes land, and how to recover when one does not, only by saying them to real people.
Learning it with a coach
The Cold Approach Bootcamp is the only in-person program we run. It is fully in the field, in Miami or New York, with a coach beside you for live feedback on every approach. Group is three consecutive days at three students per coach, and Private is fully 1-on-1 for one, two or three days. A total beginner is welcome.
A coach hears your jokes as she does and tells you which ones sound like you.
