If swiping, matches that fade and long message chains wear you out, try something else. You can join something that repeats every week, go to singles events, ask friends to introduce you, or say hello where you already are. None of these needs an app. They ask for more of your time and a bit of nerve, and in return a woman sees how you talk and carry yourself, which a photo never shows.

Join something that repeats

This is the most reliable route, and a dating coach lists it among the easiest changes a man can make. Pick an activity you already enjoy that also has women in it. If you like yoga, go to a class instead of doing it at home. If you run, join a group preparing for a race. If you like sports, join a co-ed league. If you want to learn to dance, take a class.

The key is repetition. You see the same people week after week, so a conversation can build without any pressure. Skip the pickup line. Turn up, be friendly, and talk about the thing you are both doing.

A gym, a class or a league also gives you a built-in reason to speak. "How long have you been doing this?" is enough.

Go to events built for singles

Singles dinners, quiz nights, classes and parties exist in most large cities. The advantage is that everyone there is open to meeting someone, so you skip the awkward question of whether she is single.

Thursday is an example. It describes itself as events for singles, every week, sold by ticket. We cover it in a separate article. Tickets cost money whether or not you meet anyone you like, so treat the first few as practice. Go with a plan: pick one or two people you would like to talk to, start with something about the event, and ask for a number before the end of the night if you liked her.

Ask your friends

Most men never do this, and it costs nothing. Tell two or three friends, plainly, that you would like to meet someone and you are happy to be introduced. Friends of friends also arrive with a built-in reason to trust you.

Go to the parties and dinners they invite you to, and say yes more often than you would like to. A woman who meets you through a friend already has a sense of who you are, and that makes the first conversation easier.

Say hello where you already are

Cafes, shops, the gym, a friend's party, a bookstore. Many men stall at this one, so keep the goal small: say something friendly and see what happens.

An easy opener is a comment about what is in front of you, followed by a question. After a few minutes of friendly talk, say you have enjoyed it and would like to continue over a coffee, and ask for her number. a dating coach's advice is to be direct about interest and propose a specific plan, since a man who asks plainly gives her something simple to answer.

Expect some no's. A no from a stranger costs you a few seconds and nothing else.

Use your job and your routines

Your daily routine contains more chances than you think. Coworkers in other departments, neighbors, the regular at your coffee place, the people at your gym. We cover each in detail elsewhere.

One caution: if the situation would be awkward when it goes badly, as it can with a close colleague, be careful. A woman at a class you attend once a week is lower risk than someone you must see every day at work.

Why men leave the apps, and what that tells you

Some men say they are tired of apps. That is understandable, since they take a lot of time and give back little. a dating coach has said online dating has become harder as more people use it and as the apps shift toward making money.

So treat leaving as a choice about where you spend effort, not a verdict on you. If an app produces nothing after a fair test, spend those hours elsewhere. If you simply dislike the process, the routes above are good answers.

Keep one app running on the side

You do not have to delete everything. My general rule is to test and let results decide. Keep one app on your phone, with a sharp set of photos and a short, specific page, and spend ten minutes a day on it. Meanwhile put the real effort into the routes above.

That gives you two sources of dates and a clear read on which one works for you. If, after a month, the in-person routes produce more, shift more time there.

Pick one this week

Choose one thing and do it before the weekend. Sign up for a class. Buy a ticket to an event. Tell three friends you would like to be introduced. Start with the easiest one, because a small first step makes the next one easier.

If you want help working out which route suits you and what to say when you get there, a coach can walk you through it. Either way, the goal is the same: more real conversations with women, not more hours on your phone.
