Tinder U is Tinder's student experience. It focuses Discovery on students at your university and nearby colleges, so most of the people you swipe on study close to you. It is called Tinder Uni in the UK. In some regions it is replaced by a standalone experience called College Mode, which puts school details such as your major and graduation year up front.

Who qualifies

Tinder U is not open to everyone with a student card. You have to be enrolled at one of a select group of schools. Those schools have to be 4-year, accredited and not-for-profit, with traditional face-to-face classes.

You also need a valid student email address. In the US that means a .edu address, and in the UK it means one ending in .ac.uk.

So if your school teaches mostly online, runs for profit, or does not give you a student email, you will likely not be able to join. The same goes if you have already graduated, since the rules ask for current enrollment.

Graduate students are in the same position as everyone else. What counts is that you are enrolled at a qualifying school and can verify a valid student email, not which year of study you are in.

What College Mode shows

In the regions where College Mode takes over, it adds a layer of school information to each person you see. Tinder's newsroom lists the details: school, graduation year, major, Greek life and clubs.

That changes what you learn in the first second. Before you read a single word she wrote, you know what she studies, how far along she is, and some of what she does outside class. It is a lot of material, and most men waste it.

Why campus matches are different

A match on campus is not like a match with a stranger across town. You share the same buildings, the same calendar of exams and parties, and very often the same friends.

That is an advantage. Plans are easy, because you are already ten minutes apart, and you have obvious things to talk about. A coffee between classes or a drink after a late lecture is a much smaller ask than a trip across the city.

The same closeness also means that what you do on the app does not stay on the app. If a date goes nowhere, you may still sit two rows behind her in a lecture for the rest of the semester. That is not a reason to avoid campus dating. It is a reason to be the kind of man she does not mind running into afterwards.

Your reputation travels fast on campus

a dating program makes this point well in its advice about meeting women at school. On a campus where everyone knows everyone, the behavior that is harmless with a stranger can follow you around. A woman who thinks you were rude does not vanish. She tells her friends, and her friends tell theirs.

The flip side is just as strong. Women put a lot of trust in a man their friends vouch for. A man who is known on campus as fun and decent has an easier time with everyone in that circle.

So write every message as if she might show it to her roommate, because she might. When something is not working, end it politely. And do not work your way through five women from the same friend group, because they compare notes.

Using school details without interviewing her

The school fields tempt men into the dullest possible opener: "What's your major?" She has already told you, and she has been asked it a hundred times.

a dating coach's advice on conversation applies here. Stacking factual questions about her job or her hometown makes her do all the work. Offer something instead: a take, a small story, a light tease she can answer.

Use the details as raw material. If she is a chemistry major on the rowing team, you could say she must be up at five for one and up all night for the other. It shows you looked, it is easy to reply to, and it sounds nothing like every other man who asked what she studies.

Do not limit yourself to campus

A campus is a smaller pool than a whole city. On a big university, that may not matter. On a small one, you can see everyone surprisingly fast.

Where College Mode is one of the options in the bar at the top of the app, For You is still a tap away. Use both. Campus dating is easy to start, but your best matches may still be the women who have nothing to do with your school at all.
