Discover is Hinge's main feed. It is a stream of recommendations based on mutual interest, which means everyone it shows you suits your preferences, and you suit theirs. You can open it at any time by tapping the H icon in the lower left corner of the app.

Getting to it

The H icon is the one to remember. Wherever you are in Hinge, whether you are reading a chat, checking your likes or editing your page, one tap on the H in the lower left brings you back to Discover.

Most of your time on the app should start here. It is where Hinge puts its recommendations for you, one person at a time, and where you decide whom to like and whom to pass on.

What mutual interest means for you

The phrase sounds like marketing, but it describes something concrete. Discover only fills with women who fit the preferences you set and whose preferences you fit in return.

That has a practical consequence. Your feed is not every woman you would find attractive. It is the women you would find attractive who, on paper, would also consider you. If her age range stops just below yours, or she has set a preference you do not meet, she will not appear.

So a thin feed is not always a sign that nobody is out there. Sometimes it is a sign that your own settings are narrow, or that the details on your page are ruling you out of other people's preferences.

What else sits in Discover

Discover is also where a few other Hinge features live.

When Hinge has a Most Compatible pick for you, she sits at the top of Discover. She is Hinge's daily guess at the person you are most likely to connect with, and the pick expires after 24 hours.

Subscribers also get a row of quick filters above the feed. Tapping one narrows what you see for that session.

And Discover is where ordinary likes happen. You can react to one particular photo or prompt with a comment attached, or send a Rose if you want her to see you first. Standouts, by contrast, is a separate feed where only Roses work.

Discover versus Likes You

Likes You shows the women who have already liked you. It is tempting to live there, because every woman on that screen has already said yes to something.

Do not let it become the only place you look. Discover is where you choose the women you actually want, rather than choosing only from the women who happened to choose you first. Hinge also learns from what you do in Discover. The likes you send and the pages you pass on help shape who it suggests next, and a man who only reacts to incoming likes gives it very little to learn from.

How to work the feed

Read before you decide. Each person in Discover is a full page of photos and prompts, not a single picture. Scroll to the end, then decide. The later photos and the written answers tell you whether you would actually enjoy an evening with her, and they give you something to say.

Be selective. In a dating coach's experience, apps notice how choosy you are. A man who likes nearly everyone tends to get treated as less attractive and shown fewer attractive women. Like the women you would genuinely take out and pass on the rest.

Write a comment with every like. Pick out one detail on her page and react to it in a single sentence, playful rather than a compliment on her looks. My rule is to have it written within a minute or so. You are aiming for a good line, not a perfect one.

Come back daily. coach finds that half an hour a day beats one long session at the weekend, and Discover rewards the same habit. A few careful minutes each day gives Hinge a steady picture of what you want.

What Discover cannot do for you

Discover decides who sees you and whom you see. It does not decide what she thinks when your like arrives.

Her decision starts with your lead photo and a couple of lines of your writing. If very few women like you back, the fix is rarely in the feed. It is the first photo, the prompt answers and the comments on your likes. Improve those and the same feed starts producing matches. My advice is to keep testing: change one photo or one prompt at a time, and watch whether more likes come back.

And once you do match, move toward a plan. The point of Discover is to put you in front of women who might say yes to a date, so get to the date.
