Incognito Mode is a Bumble setting that shows you only to the women you have liked. If you do not send a woman a like, you do not appear to her at all, and Bumble says the setting also hides your location. It comes with Bumble Premium and Premium+, and you switch it on or off in Settings whenever you like.
How to turn it on
Open Bumble and tap the profile icon. Tap the Settings gear, look for Incognito mode, and flip the switch. To turn it off, tap the same switch again.
Bumble says you can switch it on or off at any time. So you can run it for a week while a coworker is on the app and switch it off when she is gone.
What it changes about who sees you
Normally you can turn up in the People tab of any woman nearby whose preferences you fit, and any of them can come across you and like you. Incognito removes that. The only women who can see you are the ones you have already said yes to.
That turns every match into one you started. Nobody finds you by chance. A woman sees you because you liked her, and a match happens only if she likes you back.
For some men that is exactly the point. For others it quietly shrinks their results without them noticing, and that cost is easy to miss when you only read the feature description.
Who it is actually for
The honest use cases are about privacy, and they are good ones.
A man who teaches, or works in a small office, or runs a business in a small town may not want every client and colleague on the app to see him. A man whose ex is on Bumble may not want her scrolling past him every week. A man with a public job may simply prefer that only women he chose know he is looking.
In each of those cases the setting does one clear job. It keeps you invisible to the people you would rather not bump into, while you carry on swiping as usual.
What it costs you
Think about the two ways a match can begin. She sees you first and likes you, or you like her first and she likes you back.
Incognito keeps only the second route. Every woman who might have come across you on her own, and liked you, now never gets the chance. If you are in a city with plenty of women and your results are already good, you may not feel the loss. If your matches are thin, you have just made the funnel narrower.
a dating coach makes a related point about the apps in general. Women on them say no to most of the men they see. So the men who do well are the ones who stand out to whoever sees them, and shrinking the number who see you works against that. Turn Incognito on for a reason, not because hiding feels safer.
Incognito is not the same as Snooze
Bumble has a second setting that sounds similar and does something different. Snooze Mode hides you and lets you take a break without deleting the information on your profile.
You find it in the same Settings screen. You pick how long to snooze, for a set stretch or with no end date, and you can show your existing matches an Away Status such as "I'm traveling" or "I'm focused on work." While snoozed, you stop making new matches but can keep chatting with the ones you have. Bumble warns that any match without an active chat will expire while you are in Snooze.
So the choice is simple. Want to keep dating but control who sees you? That is Incognito. Want to stop meeting new people for a while, because you are seeing someone or working flat out? That is Snooze.
Making it work if you use it
With Incognito on, your likes are the only door in, so spend them with care.
Before you swipe right, read her answers and check what she says she is into. Like women you would genuinely take out, not every face that looks fine for half a second. A like sent on autopilot is wasted twice over now, because it is also the only way she will ever know you exist.
When she likes you back, Bumble gives each of you a single opening message and 72 hours from the match to send it. Write something that could only have been written to her. If she mentions a hiking trip, ask where she went. If she says she is learning to cook, ask what went wrong the last time.
Then move toward a plan in small steps. Agree that a drink sounds good before you pin down the night, and if you can, have a short call before you meet. My experience is that a woman who has heard your voice almost always turns up.
