Dating in Jersey City is a smaller, more local version of dating in New York. The city skews young, with a median age of about 34, and many residents work in Manhattan and ride the PATH home. Downtown, around Grove Street and the waterfront, has the bars, restaurants and parks where you will meet women in person, and Hoboken next door adds more nightlife. The catch is that many people treat Jersey City as the place they live and Manhattan as the place they go out.

That gap is also your opening. Here is who lives there, where single women in Jersey City spend their time, and how dates work on this side of the river.

Who lives there

Jersey City is the second most populous city in New Jersey, after Newark. Wikipedia gives a median age of 34.2, which tells you a lot about the scene. Many residents are young professionals who moved there for more space and a shorter commute than Brooklyn or Queens would give them.

Many of them are also new. They work long days across the river, they have not yet built a circle of friends in town, and they would like a reason to go out closer to home. That is a woman who is open to a friendly hello on a Saturday afternoon.

Downtown: Grove Street, Newark Avenue and the parks

Downtown is the center of the social scene. The blocks around the Grove Street PATH station hold most of the bars, restaurants and cafes. Nearby, part of Newark Avenue is a pedestrian plaza where people sit outside in warm weather.

Two small parks anchor the brownstone blocks around it. Hamilton Park and Van Vorst Park are neighborhood squares with benches and dog runs, and people pass through all weekend. They are good places to meet women who have time, and good places to walk on a date.

The waterfront and Liberty State Park

The Hudson River Waterfront Walkway runs along the river, with an unbroken view of the Manhattan skyline. Around Exchange Place and Newport it is busy at lunch and after work, and on weekends people walk, run and sit along the water.

Liberty State Park, to the south, is much larger, with open lawns and views of the Statue of Liberty. It works best on a weekend afternoon, either to meet people or as an easy, free date.

Journal Square and the Heights

Away from the river, the city changes. Journal Square is a transit hub with its own PATH station and a more mixed, more local crowd. The Heights, on the northern edge, is mostly residential, with small parks that look out over Hoboken and Manhattan.

These areas have fewer bars, so social life runs more through cafes, gyms, local spots and friends. Being a regular somewhere matters more here than downtown.

Hoboken, Manhattan and the PATH

Hoboken, just north, has a busy bar scene on and around Washington Street and a young crowd. Many Jersey City residents go out there, and many go into Manhattan instead.

The PATH makes that easy. Trains from Grove Street, Exchange Place and Newport reach the World Trade Center and Midtown in a short ride. It cuts the other way too, though. a dating coach's experience is that women come into Manhattan easily and rarely leave it for somewhere farther out. A woman who lives in Manhattan may treat Jersey City as a trip.

How dates work on this side of the river

The easiest dates are with women who live in Jersey City or Hoboken. A drink near Grove Street, a walk along the waterfront and a second stop a few blocks away make a simple, relaxed evening. Both of you get home in minutes.

If you meet a woman in Manhattan, offer to come to her side for the first date. Once you know each other, the skyline from the Jersey City waterfront is a good reason for her to make the trip.

Practicing with a coach across the river

Cold Approach runs its Bootcamp in person in Miami and New York only, so for a man in Jersey City the training happens a PATH ride away. In New York it is arranged with you after you book: Private runs one, two or three days with your coach alone, and Group, with no more than three students per coach, is available on request. Each training day is two four-hour blocks in the field, with daygame and night game mixed to suit you and live coaching on every approach. There is no skill floor, and you leave with a written practice plan you can use at home.
