The New Here badge means the woman you are looking at has only just joined Hinge. It sits next to her name for about a week and then goes away by itself. If you have just joined too, you can check whether the badge is showing next to your name from your settings.

What the badge tells you

The badge is a label about time, nothing more. It tells you she is in her first days on the app. It does not tell you anything about her looks, her intentions or how serious she is.

When the week is up, the badge drops off and nothing else about her changes. Same woman, same photos, same answers. So treat it as a small piece of timing information, not as a reason to like someone you would otherwise skip.

Checking whether yours is showing

If you have just signed up, you might want to know whether women are seeing the badge next to your name. Hinge lets you check. Open your Profile, then go into Settings, and you can see whether the badge appears on your page.

It is worth a look, because it tells you whether you are in your first-week window. That matters more than most men think, for reasons covered below.

Why her first week is a good time to like her

A woman who has just joined has not had time to build up a long list of likes waiting for her. A comment you send in her first days is likely to sit near the top of a short list rather than the bottom of a long one.

That window closes fast. a dating coach tells a story about a woman he knew who had been away from a dating site for a while. She logged back in for five minutes, and in that time her inbox filled with a flood of messages from men who saw she was active. A woman who is merely cute gets a smaller version of the same flood. Her quiet first days are the easiest time for your like to get read properly.

So if you see the badge on a woman you would genuinely like to take out, do not sit on it. Like her that day, with a real comment.

What to write to a woman who just joined

Do not mention the badge. "I see you're new here" is the first thing half the men in her feed will say, and it gives her nothing to answer except "yes."

Do not explain the app to her either, and do not assume she is new to dating. She may have just come off another app, or out of a long relationship, and she has almost certainly heard every opener already.

Write the comment you would write to anyone. Pick one specific thing from her page, a photo from somewhere interesting or an answer with an opinion in it, and react to it in a sentence. Tease her a little if the answer invites it. The goal is to be the one like in her first week that sounds like a person rather than a line.

Do not build your week around one new member

A new member is still deciding whether she likes the app at all. Her replies may be slow or uneven while she works it out.

My advice about online dating in general applies here. The apps work best when you are talking to several women at once, not when you pick one and wait on her. A woman with the badge deserves a good like. She does not deserve your whole evening before she has written back.

When the badge is next to your name

Your own first week works the same way in reverse. Women in your area see the badge next to your name, and some of them will look at you because of it.

That makes your first week the worst possible time to have a half-finished page. Men often sign up, throw in whatever photos are on their phone, and plan to fix it later. By the time they do, the badge has gone and the curious first looks have gone with it.

So get the page right before you join. Lead with a clear photo of your face in daylight, cut anything blurry or dark, and give each written answer something a woman could reply to. Then answer every like that comes in quickly, while the interest is warm.

After the week is up

Once the badge disappears, she is simply another woman on the app, and you are simply another man. If you liked her during her first week and heard nothing, let it go and move on to the next woman in your feed. If she did answer, the badge has done its only job. From there it comes down to the conversation and how smoothly you turn it into a date.
