ENM stands for ethically non-monogamous. Some people write it as consensually non-monogamous. A person who puts it in a bio is saying she is open to having more than one romantic or sexual relationship at the same time, and that everyone involved knows and agrees. It is the opposite of cheating, because the honesty is the whole point.
What the letters say, word by word
"Non-monogamous" means not limited to one partner. "Ethical" is the part that matters, because it separates this from sneaking around. Every partner knows about the others, and everyone has agreed to the arrangement.
So when you see ENM on a profile, you are reading a statement about how she wants her relationships to work. It is not a personality type, and it does not tell you what she is like on a date.
What it does not mean
It does not mean she will sleep with anyone who asks. Plenty of ENM people have firm standards and a slow pace, and some are in committed relationships with a long-term partner.
It does not mean she is available to you in particular. A woman who is non-monogamous can be as picky as any other woman, and she may already have a partner or two.
It also does not mean the same thing for every person who uses it. Some people use the label for an open relationship, usually a couple who agree that each of them may see other people. Some use it for polyamory, which means several loving, ongoing relationships. Some use it for something looser. The letters give you the category and not the details.
Words you may see next to it
Polyamory, or poly, is usually about forming more than one emotional relationship, not only sexual ones. An open relationship usually describes a couple who allow outside partners, often sexual ones. Some people write "primary partner" to mean the main long-term relationship, with other connections alongside it.
You do not need to learn every label. If one confuses you, ask her what it means for her. That is a normal question, and she will probably be glad you asked it directly.
How to respond when you see it
Decide what you actually want before you write to her. If you want a monogamous relationship, ENM is a clear sign she is not the right match, and you save both of you some time by moving on. There is nothing wrong with her or with you.
If you are curious or open to it, treat her like any other woman. Pick something specific in her photos or her answers and start from there. Do not open with a question about her sex life, and do not treat the label as an invitation. Ask what she is looking for when the conversation is going well.
Ask plainly how her setup works before you get attached. Does she have a partner now? Do her partners know she is dating? What does she want from someone new? Honest answers early save a lot of confusion later.
What a dating coach says about meeting non-monogamous partners
a dating coach has written about meeting his own poly partners, and his point is that you do not need a special scene. One partner came through friends and another from an app, and in both cases what mattered was honesty. He says people who are already comfortable with non-monogamy want low-drama honesty, not mystery.
For a man, that means being calm and respectful, saying what you want, and letting her say what she wants without pressure.
If you want to put it on your own profile
If you are non-monogamous, say so plainly in your bio, and do it early, so no one has to decode you. a dating coach's view is that a clear line beats a clever one. A short statement of how you date and what you value in a partner does more than a paragraph of explaining.
Vague phrases such as "open-minded" make women guess. If you mean you want more than one relationship, say it in words she cannot misread. You will lose some women who want one partner, and that is the point. The ones who stay are the ones you can be honest with.
Finally, keep your photos and the rest of your page normal. A page that is only about your relationship style looks like you have nothing else to offer.
