Tinder is the one most often named for Europe, and a dating coach says that in many European places it is nearly the only app people are on. Hinge, Bumble, Badoo and Facebook Dating also operate there. No single list is true for the whole continent, because the best app in Lisbon is not always the best app in Berlin. Nobody publishes a clean ranking by city.
Why there is no one European answer
Europe is dozens of countries with different languages and different habits. A dating app wins a country when enough people there decide to use it, and that is a local decision made one friend group at a time.
So the useful question is not which app is popular in Europe. It is which app the women in your city have installed. An app that is crowded in one capital can be nearly empty in a town two hours away, even inside the same country.
What we can say about each one
Tinder is the app coach points to first. He says some of his students in Europe still swear by it and do very well on it. He also says the picture there differs from the United States, where he finds Hinge better in many big cities. That is one experienced man's read, not a measurement.
Bumble publishes very little about its size. The one number it gives for Europe is in a European Union filing, which says its average monthly active users there are well below 45 million. That is a ceiling, not a count, so do not read it as a ranking.
Badoo is older. The same company's filing describes it as a market leader in several European countries and in Latin America. That is a reason to check it where Tinder looks thin.
Facebook Dating is a different kind of option. Facebook's help page lists the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain and Italy among the countries where it is available. It suggests friends of friends unless you turn that off.
How to test your own city
You can answer this in an evening, for free.
Install two apps and set both to your real location. Open each at a normal hour and swipe through the same number of profiles. Notice how many women you see, how many look recent and active, and how many are tourists or students passing through.
An app that shows you plenty of local women is the one to use. An app that runs out of people in ten minutes, or keeps showing the same faces, is not worth your hours in that city.
Ask the women who are there
Local knowledge beats any list. If you have a female friend, a coworker or a sister in the city, ask which app she and her friends use and which one she deleted. Ask a woman you meet on a first date what she is on. You will learn more from three of those answers than from any article.
Ask men too, but weigh the answer. A man who says an app is dead may simply be getting few matches from his own page, and the app itself may be fine.
Travel and moving
If you are traveling or about to move, check before you go. An app that works well in your home city may be thin in another country, and a feature you rely on may depend on where you are. Do not assume the app you know behaves the same everywhere.
Set your location to the new city a few days early where the app allows it, look around, and decide which two to keep.
Language and city size change the answer
Inside one country, the app that fills a capital may feel empty in a small town. Large cities hold enough people for several apps to stay busy at once, and a smaller town may support only one. A man who moves from a big city to a smaller one often has to reset his expectations about how many women he will see.
Language matters too. In a city with many foreign students and workers, an app popular with visitors may show you a very different crowd from the one the locals use. Neither is wrong, but they are different pools, so know which one you are fishing in.
Pick two, not six
a dating coach's advice is that you do not have to be loyal to one app, and that being on more than one is fine. But a man who installs six apps spreads his attention across all of them and answers none in time.
Start with the app most people around you use, add a second that suits what you are good at, and keep whichever one turns your time into conversations and dates. In Europe, as everywhere, the best app is the one that gives you women to talk to.
