Start with one clear face photo
Your first photo should show your face from the chest up. Use good light. Face the camera or turn slightly to one side. Keep your eyes open and your mouth relaxed.
Take the photo outside in open shade, or stand near a large window. Do not stand under a bright ceiling light. It puts dark spots under your eyes and makes your skin look dull.
Wear a shirt that fits your shoulders. A plain shirt works better than a shirt with a large logo. Keep sunglasses, hats, and headphones out of the first photo.
Do not use a group photo first. She should not have to study five faces to find you. She should know who you are in one second.
Skip the bathroom photo, too. The mirror, sink, and phone cover most of the frame. A woman is trying to see your face, not your bathroom.
You can smile with your teeth, or keep a small closed-mouth smile. Both work. What matters is that your face looks relaxed. Ask a friend to take ten photos while you talk. Most men look better in a photo taken during a real moment than in a stiff pose.
Show your life with three or four more photos
Your other photos should answer simple questions:
- What do you do for fun?
- What do you look like from head to toe?
- What would it be like to spend time with you?
Use one full-body photo. Stand in a real place, such as a park, a street with shops, or a quiet outdoor cafe. Wear clothes you would actually wear on a date. Make sure your shoes and pants are visible.
Use one photo that shows an activity. You might be holding a tennis racket, cooking in your kitchen, or standing near a trail after a walk. The activity gives her something easy to ask about.
Use one social photo if you have a good one. Keep it to three or four people. Make sure you are easy to spot. Do not use a photo where every man wears the same shirt and she has to guess which one is you.
Add one photo with a different setting and outfit. If every photo comes from the same room, your profile looks like you took all of them in one rushed hour. A photo outside, one at home, and one at a social event give her a better view of your life.
Avoid photos that need a long explanation. If you are holding a fish, standing beside a rented sports car, or posing with a woman whose face you covered, she may spend more time asking what the photo means than looking at you.
Make every photo easy to read
A strong Hinge profile has photos that look clear on a small phone screen. Check each one at the size she will see it. If your face becomes a small blur, use a closer photo.
Keep the background simple. A clean wall, a green park, or a busy street can work. A pile of laundry, a messy bed, or a car filled with trash pulls attention away from your face.
Use natural color. Heavy filters can make your skin look strange. Black and white photos can look serious and distant. Your photos should look like you, not like a character from a music video.
Watch the crop. Hinge may cut the top or sides of a photo on some screens. Keep your head away from the top edge. Keep your body near the center. Check the full preview before you keep the photo.
Do not use six versions of the same pose. If you have three photos where you stand with one hand in your pocket, two of them are taking up space. Replace one with a photo that shows you doing something.
Your clothes should fit and look clean. You do not need expensive clothes. Dark jeans, clean shoes, and a fitted shirt can work. A wrinkled shirt, stained shoes, or a shirt that hangs off your body will hurt the photo before your face gets a fair look.
Use your Hinge prompts to add context
Your photos should do most of the visual work. Your prompts should give her an easy way to start a conversation.
Do not write a long list of traits. “Loyal, funny, driven, and adventurous” gives her no picture of your life. Write about a real thing she can ask about.
Weak answer:
I love trying new restaurants.
Better answer:
I judge a restaurant by the bread, the coffee, and whether the waiter lets me order dessert first.
The second answer gives her a detail. She can ask where you eat, what dessert you order, or whether you really eat dessert first.
Use a prompt that shows what spending time with you might look like:
A perfect Sunday is a long walk, tacos from the small place near my apartment, and a bad movie we both pretend to enjoy.
That answer gives her three real images. It also makes it easy for her to reply.
Do not use a prompt to defend yourself. Lines such as “I’m not good at taking photos” or “I never know what to write here” make her do the work of making your profile feel better. Choose clear photos and write short answers about things you actually do.
You can also use a prompt to show your sense of humor, but keep the joke easy to understand. If she needs to read it twice, it will not help you.
Remove photos that lower your chances
Look at your profile as if you were meeting yourself for the first time. Ask what each photo says before you decide to keep it.
Remove photos where your face is hidden. Remove photos with an ex, even if you cropped her out. Remove photos from years ago if your hair, beard, or body looks very different now. Remove photos where you look drunk, angry, or bored.
A profile can also lose strength when every photo tries to prove status. A car, a bottle, a watch, and a nightclub can make you look like you are asking to be judged by what you own. One photo in a nice place is fine. Your whole profile should not look like a display case.
Show your face first. Show your body next. Then show the places and activities that fill your free time.
The best Hinge profile makes a woman think, “I know what he looks like, and I can see what a first date with him might feel like.”
