Skip a Standout when you honestly would not want a date with her, and not for any other reason. Hinge says skipping tells it you were not interested. So an X tapped out of habit, or tapped because you have no Rose to spend, teaches the app something untrue about your taste.

What Standouts is and what an X does

Standouts is a feed of the people catching the most attention on Hinge, tailored to your preferences and recent activity. A batch appears daily.

The difference from your ordinary Discover feed is the way you respond. In Standouts you can only send a Rose, not an ordinary like, and a Rose moves your like to the top of her Likes You. That makes each response a more costly one.

You skip a Standout by swiping it to the left. Hinge says skipping indicates to it that you were not interested. That is the sentence the whole question rests on.

Why the X is not free

The X looks harmless because nothing visibly happens. Hinge, though, describes your likes and skips as inputs. The same system that builds your Discover feed learns from who you like, skip or match with, so each skip is a small piece of instruction.

If you X a woman because you do not like her, that is a correct instruction. If you X a woman you like, only because the Rose is scarce, you have told the system you are not interested in a type you want. Do that dozens of times and the feed begins to drift away from the women you actually want.

Hinge also says HingeX prioritizes people in your Discover feed who are more your type, based on who you have recently liked or skipped. Subscribers feel the effect of careless skipping more directly, but the logic is the same for everyone.

When skipping is right

Skip when your honest answer is no. She is not your type, she is outside your range, her page gives you a reason to pass. A skip is the right tool for those, and the cost of a wrong skip is small.

Skip faster than you think you should. My coaching on the apps comes down to selectivity: know what you want and respond to that, and do not collect people. A man with clear standards gets read more clearly by the system, and a clear signal is the point of skipping at all.

When to leave it alone instead

Say you see a Standout you would happily meet, and you have no Rose left. Your instinct is to X her to clear the screen. Resist it.

Hinge says a Standouts profile may later appear in Discover, though that is not guaranteed. It describes a skip as a statement of disinterest. It does not describe what happens when you scroll past a profile you like, so there is no promise there either way. But a skip is a clear negative signal, and you do not mean it. Scrolling past is the more honest option when you are undecided or out of Roses.

If you do skip someone by accident, Hinge gives free users a small allowance of undone skips each week, shared across Discover, Standouts and Likes You. Treat that as a safety net, not a plan.

How to spend the Rose

A Rose is the only way to respond to a Standout, so the real decision is who gets it.

Spend it on the woman you most want, not the one who looks most popular. A Rose lifts you to the top of her Likes You, and that is worth the most when she is someone who would be glad to hear from you and whom you would genuinely meet.

Add a comment if the option is there. Hinge says adding one makes a like more likely to get a response. Make it about something she wrote, short and easy to answer. My advice on comments is to refer to a prompt rather than a photo, since it reads as more genuine.

What not to do

Do not use Standouts as a game of hunting for the most attractive women on the app. Those profiles are drawing the most attention from everyone, which means the most competition for her, and your Rose competes with many others.

Do not X everyone to speed through the batch. You will finish quicker and teach the app that you like nobody.

Do not worry that one X ruins your feed. One skip is a single data point. The damage comes from a habit.

A simple rule

If you would meet her, either send the Rose or scroll past. If you would not, skip her. Keep to that and the Standouts feed stays an honest picture of what you want.
