Yes, if you are truly done and her page keeps pulling you back. An unmatch is permanent, it removes her chat from your matches, and Hinge cannot undo it. Pair it with the Block List so she cannot come back through the feed. If part of you still hopes she will write, the button will not give you what you want, so settle that question first.

First, are you done?

This is the question under the question, and the button cannot answer it for you.

There is a clear line. When you are genuinely finished with a woman, block her everywhere you can and put as many barriers between you as possible. When you only want some space and secretly hope she comes back, a block is the wrong tool, because it shuts the very door you are waiting at.

Be honest about which one you are. A man who says he is done and then looks at her page every night is not done. He is sulking, and the unmatch will be a gesture, not a decision.

What an unmatch actually does

Hinge says that when you unmatch someone, you disappear from her view at once. Neither of you can see the conversation again, and Hinge is unable to restore it on its end.

Hinge's help pages do not describe a notification to her, so she will not receive an alert. She may notice if she goes looking for your chat. Either way, the effect on your side is the same: the conversation is gone, you cannot message her through Hinge, and you cannot undo it.

If you only want her out of sight while you decide, Hinge has Hide. It takes the chat out of your list without ending the match.

Why an unmatch is not enough

An unmatch ends one conversation. It does not stop her page from turning up in your feed, and it does not stop yours from reaching hers.

The Block List does the second job. Open Settings, tap Block List, and either sync your phone contacts or add her phone number or email by hand. Hinge does not notify the people you block.

There is one catch. The block only works if the number or email you enter is the one she used to sign up. Add every number and email you have for her. And because Hinge says the Block List does not touch existing matches, do both: unmatch to close the chat you have, and block to cover the future.

When she is in your feed but you have not matched

You do not need an unmatch for this at all. She is simply a page that appeared.

Skip her, or add her to the Block List if seeing her is a problem. You do not owe anyone a like, and you do not owe her an explanation for not liking her.

What you should not do is like her page to see whether she responds. That turns the app into a place to test her, and every test costs you a little of the progress you made getting over her.

When the two of you are matched and on good terms

Sometimes an ex ends up in your matches because you both came back to the app, and you are fine with it.

Then leave it alone, and keep Hinge from becoming the place you keep in touch. If the two of you really are friends, text each other. Do not send messages through the app as a way to keep her in your day.

Notice how you feel when her name appears. If you are indifferent, she can stay. If it stings, that is your answer, and the Block List is cheap.

Do not use the unmatch as a message

Men sometimes unmatch an ex to make a point, to show her he moved on. She will not read it that way. Hinge does not announce it, and nothing about a missing chat reaches her as a statement.

If you want her to know you are over it, the proof is that you stop checking. Your time is better spent on the women you have not met.

The same applies if she unmatches you

If you open Hinge and find her gone, do not hunt for another way to reach her. Hinge names three possible causes when a match disappears: she unmatched you, she deleted her account, or Hinge removed it. You will not find out which, and it does not matter.

Then spend the next hour on the people in your matches who are still there. A new conversation with a woman who is curious about you does more for the sting than any amount of reading old messages. Reply to one of them tonight.
