Tinder, Badoo and Bumble are the names the older lists agree on, and Tinder is the only classic swipe app in Sensor Tower's newest top five, where chat apps like MiChat now lead. Brand Spur's list starts with Badoo, Tinder and Bumble, then adds Hinge and OkCupid. Sensor Tower's second-quarter 2024 iOS snapshot lists Tinder, Bumble, Trueflutter, Badoo and TanTan.
There is no single official ranking, so treat any list as a snapshot. Which apps lead depends on the year, on iPhone versus Android, and on whether the list counts downloads, active users or revenue.
What the sources actually say
Brand Spur (a 2021 list). Its five apps are Badoo, Tinder, Bumble, Hinge and OkCupid. It calls Badoo the most downloaded dating app in Africa and says most of Badoo's Nigerian users are in Abuja and Lagos. It says Tinder is very popular in Nigeria and Kenya, and that Bumble has found a following among Nigerian women.
Nairametrics (a Google Trends report). Google Trends shows Nigeria ranked first in the world for searches of "online dating applications" going back to 2004, ahead of Ghana, the Philippines, Jamaica and Kenya. The same article lists apps Nigerians use: Tinder, Badoo, Zoosk, OkCupid, Hinge, Plenty of Fish and Bumble. Note that this is a list of apps people use, not a ranking.
Sensor Tower, iOS, second quarter of 2024. The five were Tinder, Bumble, Trueflutter (an African dating app), Badoo and TanTan. Tinder is listed first, with roughly 153K active users on iOS at both the start and end of the quarter.
Sensor Tower, unified platforms, fourth quarter of 2025. The five were Hugmi, MiChat, Talkie Live, Tinder and LiveUp. Only Tinder is a classic swipe app. The rest are chat and video-chat apps. MiChat's active users grew from about 268K to over 413K over the period, while Tinder's active users fell from about 226K to 168K.
The takeaway is that the swipe apps are still big, and MiChat grew fast in the newest data.
The main apps, in plain terms
Tinder. You swipe through profiles and chat with the people who match you. Brand Spur says it is used for both long-term relationships and casual dating. Sensor Tower reported weekly Tinder revenue in Nigeria peaking at about $3.4K in early April 2024.
Badoo. Nairametrics lists chat, photo verification and virtual gifts as features. It is the app Brand Spur ties most closely to Lagos and Abuja.
Bumble. After a match, the woman sends the first message. That makes it a different experience for a man: you wait to be messaged, so your photos and profile do all the work.
Hinge. Nairametrics describes it as more relationship-focused, with prompts.
Trueflutter. Listed by Sensor Tower as "Trueflutter: African Dating", it made Sensor Tower's iOS top five in Nigeria in 2024.
Plenty of Fish and OkCupid. Both are named in the Nairametrics list. It credits Plenty of Fish with free messaging and OkCupid with questions that improve matching.
We could not open the apps' own help pages to confirm what is free and what costs money in Nigeria, so we give no prices. Check the pricing screen inside each app before you pay.
How to pick one
An app can be famous and still be thin in your city. A national ranking does not tell you how many women are near you.
Download two or three, add your photos, and look at how many women appear within the distance you would travel. If the stack runs dry in a day or two, that app is not worth your evenings. If you see new faces every day, it is worth a longer test.
a dating coach's point is that app choice depends on region. He says Tinder is nearly the only app people use in parts of Europe and works well, while in the United States it has many fake profiles and Hinge tends to be better. He gives no answer for Nigeria, and we will not invent one. The method carries over: test where you actually are.
Sites that call themselves free
Many websites call themselves free dating sites. A lot of them let you join for nothing and then charge you to send or read messages, which is the part that matters.
Find out what the free account can really do before you spend time on it. If it only lets you look, it is not free in any way you can use. Be careful with a site that asks for card details to join a free service, or that pushes you toward a paid plan in the first week.
When it goes wrong: money requests
The biggest risk to a man on any dating app is a woman who becomes warm very fast and then asks for money. The reason always sounds good: a fee, a ticket, a medical bill, a business idea.
Never send money to someone you have not met in person. There is no honest version of that request, and it applies in every country on every app. The same goes for gift cards, crypto and any "investment" a new contact says she is doing well from.
Be just as careful with explicit photos of yourself. Someone who gets one can threaten to share it. Do not send anything with your face in it to a person you have not met.
Other signs an app or account is not worth your time:
- A new page with no photo gets attention from very attractive women within the hour. Nothing real behaves that way.
- Every plan to meet dissolves. Real women reply in a normal rhythm and agree to meet.
- Reading or answering costs extra each time. That app is paid to keep you talking, not to get you a date.
Get more from whichever app you pick
Spend your likes on women you would really write to. a dating coach tells students who like everyone to stop, and says results improve once they choose carefully.
Make the first photo a clear, well-lit shot of your face. Add a few photos taken on different days. Write a first line that comments on one specific thing on her page and keep it short. Then suggest a coffee within a few messages. A date near your own area beats three weeks of chat.
