It isn't weird, and reconnecting is easier than it feels. Send one short, light message that gives her something specific to answer, acknowledge the gap without a big apology, and suggest a plan if she replies. Avoid a bare "hey." If she doesn't answer, send one follow-up after a few days and then move on.
Why an old match is worth a message
Most guys keep hunting for new matches while a small pile of women who already know them sits untouched. A woman who has already matched with you or replied to you is often easier to move forward than a stranger. The hard part, initial interest, is usually done. What's left is giving her a reason to talk again.
How long is too long? Advice on this says messaging is most common within two to three months of a match, but if you share strong interests you can reach out later, and some people write after six months or a year. The longer it's been, the more your message has to earn the reply.
Don't send "hey"
"Hey" or "what's up" makes her do the work. It's low effort and easy to ignore. Give her something to react to. Keep it light and easy to answer.
Three ways to do that:
Reference something you actually talked about. A place, a show, a plan.
- "Did you ever finish that series you were obsessed with, or did it betray you in the end?"
- "I watched that movie you were recommending. You were right."
Make a light joke about the gap. Don't apologize at length.
- "Has anything exciting happened since we matched?"
- "I'm not great at starting conversations. Do you want to try?"
Share something that reminded you of her.
- "I found a song I can't stop listening to. What have you been listening to lately?"
What not to do
- Don't write an apology essay. "I've been meaning to reach out" over a paragraph makes it heavy. A single honest line is enough: "Sorry I dropped off. How have you been?"
- Don't pitch yourself. Skip the list of reasons you're great.
- Don't send three follow-ups. One follow-up after a few days is fine if your first message was good. Two more after that is auditioning for a role she hasn't cast.
- Don't act desperate. If it comes across that way, the chat gets hard to restart.
Time it well
A decent message sent when she's likely to engage beats a perfect line sent at a bad time. Evenings after work and weekend afternoons tend to work. A timely hook helps too: a holiday, a big event, or something funny everyone's talking about gives you both something immediate to react to.
If she replies, move it forward
The goal isn't to become pen pals. If she's responsive, don't spend a week trading long text essays. Get a reply, build a little energy and suggest the next step.
- "You're actually funny. Want to grab a coffee this week?"
- "I'd like to take you out sometime. Mind if I get your number?"
If meeting isn't possible yet, suggest something light:
- "Let's do a 20-minute call this week. If it's terrible, we both get our evening back."
That works because it lowers the pressure. A lot of women are open to reconnecting, but not to another endless text exchange with no direction.
If she doesn't reply
Don't take it personally. She may not have seen your message among others, or she may have lost interest. Send one simple follow-up a few days later, such as a plain "Hi" or "Just stopping by to say hi." Then drop it.
Know when a lead is dead
Not every old match is worth waking up. Good signs when she answers:
- She replies with effort.
- She asks questions back.
- She remembers details.
- The tone feels warm, even if the pace is slow.
Bad signs:
- One-word replies
- Long delays with no energy
- No questions back
- You're doing all the steering
If it's cold, move on. You're looking for women who were mildly interested and simply got lost in the noise, not trying to revive every chat from the past. Message the warm ones and skip the dead ones.
