Talk to strangers out loud, in small doses, starting this week. Say hello to a cashier, ask a woman in a cafe a plain question, and build up from there. Comfort with women is a physical skill, like riding a bike, and it comes from doing the thing while you are a little uncomfortable, not from reading about it first.
The apps will be easier afterward. They rely on the same ability to be curious about a woman and say something easy to answer. The only difference is that on the phone you can hide that you never learned it.
What to know first
- Comfort comes from repetition, so the plan is small spoken conversations, often.
- A good first goal is to say a sentence to a woman and walk away. It does not need to go anywhere.
- Texting gives you time to think. Talking does not, which is why men who are fine online can lock up in person.
- You do not need to quit the apps while you practice.
- A Bootcamp compresses this into field days with a coach next to you, and it requires no experience.
Why the apps are the wrong place to start
A dating app lets you rewrite a sentence five times before she sees it. That is useful, and it is also the trap. If your confidence with women has only ever been built where you can edit, it has no way to cover the first ten seconds of a live conversation, which is where most men stall.
There is a second problem. On an app, every awkward moment looks like a failure of your profile or your luck. In person, you see what actually happened: she smiled, or she did not, and you can try something different with the next woman. That feedback is quick and it is specific, which is why it teaches more.
The ladder: four small steps
a dating coach's method for men who tighten up is progressive desensitization. That is a long name for a simple idea. Take a step that is slightly uncomfortable, and repeat it until it is boring. His description of why it works is that it "very rapidly gives your brain evidence that talking to girls isn't really that scary."
You can build the ladder yourself:
- Make a sound. Walk up to a woman in a public place, say hello, and keep walking. The only goal is to open your mouth around a stranger.
- Ask for something practical. Where is a good coffee place near here? Do you know what time this shop closes?
- Ask for her opinion. Which of these two do you like better? Is the soup here any good?
- Say something about her or the moment, and give your name. "That is a great jacket. I am Sam, I am only here to say so."
Do each step until it stops making your stomach drop, then move to the next. coach also gives a daily floor: "I set a rule: three approaches a day, every day. No exceptions." Three small conversations a day adds up to nearly a hundred in a month, and a man who has had a hundred small conversations is not the same man who started.
What to talk about once you get there
Men who lock up often assume the problem is having nothing to say. Usually the problem is looking for something clever when the room is already handing over a subject.
- Something in front of you. A book in her hand, a drink she ordered, the music, the line, the weather that is ruining everyone's plans.
- Her opinion on something small. People enjoy being asked what they think. Ask which dish is worth ordering or which neighborhood is better for coffee.
- One real fact about you. After she answers, hand back something short: "I just moved here, so I am working through every cafe on the block."
- Whatever she lights up about. If her voice speeds up when she mentions her dog or her trip, ask one more question about that.
The structure is simple. Say something easy to answer, listen, share a little, and ask one more question. If it turns into an interview, stop asking and tell her something instead.
What carries over to the apps
When the live skill is in place, three things get easier on the phone.
First, you stop treating a slow reply as a verdict. You already know that most small interactions go nowhere, and that none of them hurt.
Second, you write like you speak. A plain question about something she mentioned beats a clever line, for the same reason it does in a cafe.
Third, you ask for a plan sooner. Men who have practiced saying "get a coffee with me Thursday" to a real woman find it easier to type than men who have only typed. The apps are a way to start talking to women. Meeting them is the rest.
Where a coach shortens the climb
You can do all of this alone, and many men stall at the same two places: the step is too big, so they retreat, or too small, so they never move up. A coach standing beside you sizes the step, sees what you cannot see yourself, and corrects it while the moment is still fresh.
A Cold Approach Bootcamp is built for this. Each training day has two four-hour blocks in the field, daygame by day and nightgame in the evening, mixed to suit you. There is no skill floor, and a man who has never approached a woman is welcome in Group and in Private. Approach anxiety is the specialty. It runs in Miami and New York, and you leave with a written practice plan.
Questions men ask
Should I delete the apps until I am comfortable?
No. Practice and apps can run side by side. Many men find that a few weeks of live conversations changes how they use the apps.
How long does this take?
It depends on how often you practice and where you are starting. Nobody can give you an honest number, and a coach cannot either. What you can count is conversations had, not weeks passed.
What if I say something awkward?
You will. Say "that came out wrong" and keep going. A woman is rarely scoring you. Most of the time she has forgotten the line before you reach the corner.
Is a Bootcamp only for men who are very shy?
No. It also suits men who talk easily with friends and go quiet around a woman they like, and men who are fluent and stuck on one part of the conversation.
