Open My preferences and tap More criteria. From there you can narrow down who happn shows you, using the same details members answer when they describe themselves, such as a height range, being a night owl, or looking for a relationship. happn says you need a Premium account to use it. And it has one side effect worth knowing before you switch it on: anyone who has not answered that question drops out of what you see.

Where to find More criteria

The setting sits inside My preferences, the same place you set who you want to see in the first place. Tap More criteria and you get a list of the details people can fill in about themselves.

Pick the ones you care about, set the range or the answer you want, and happn narrows your search to the people whose answers fit. You can go back and loosen it at any time.

What you can filter by

The filters are built from the questions every member is asked when they write up their own page. So if members can say how tall they are, you can filter by height. If they can say they are a night owl, you can look for night owls. If they can say they want a relationship, you can look for the women who said so.

That last one is the filter most men actually want. It saves you weeks of polite chats with women who want something different from you.

The people it hides

Here is the catch. When you filter on a detail, happn hides everyone who left that detail blank.

That sounds tidy until you think about who skips questions. Plenty of attractive, interesting women fill in their photos and a line or two, then leave the rest empty. They are not hiding anything. They just could not be bothered with the form. A tight filter on four or five details throws all of them away without you ever seeing them.

So add filters one at a time. Switch one on, look at your feed for a few days, and see what it costs you. If your feed turns thin, the filter is taking out more good women than bad ones.

Filter on what you would walk away over

The useful question for each filter is simple. Would this detail actually end it for you?

If you want a relationship and she wants nothing serious, that is a real mismatch, and filtering on it is sensible. If you would rather she was a certain height but would happily date a woman two inches off it, that filter is doing you harm. It removes women you would have liked, and you will never know they were there.

a dating coach makes a related point about the women you attract. The more clearly your page says who you are, the fewer women respond, but the ones who do are more your type. Filters are the same trade from your side. Narrow on purpose, not by habit.

Answer the same questions about yourself

This is the half of the feature most men miss, and it matters more than your own settings.

Women use More criteria too. If she filters for a height range and you left your height blank, you do not appear for her at all. If she filters for men who want a relationship and you skipped that question, you are gone from her feed before she has seen your first photo.

So open your own page and answer every question honestly. Each blank field is a filter somebody else can use to remove you. Filling them in costs you five minutes and keeps you visible to every woman who searches that way.

While you are there, read the rest of your page as she would. Clear photos, a line or two that sounds like a person, and honest answers about what you want will do more for you than any filter setting.

Is it worth Premium

a dating coach's standard advice on paid features is to try them and keep only what makes a real difference. This one is easy to judge.

If you live somewhere busy, cross paths with a lot of people, and keep running into women who want something different from you, More criteria saves real time. If your feed is already short, filtering it further mostly makes it shorter. In that case the money does more good spent on better photos or a better page.
