Finish the drink or the meal, thank her, and leave on time. Say one honest, kind sentence if the moment calls for it, and do not promise to text her if you will not. You do not owe her a long explanation or another hour of your evening. You owe her politeness and a clear exit, which takes about a minute. Dating apps make this easier to manage, since after swiping and messaging with matches you can agree on a short coffee before you ever sit down.
Decide early, not at the end
Most men find out they are not interested within the first twenty minutes and then spend two hours hoping to feel differently. That is unfair to both of you.
Check in with yourself about halfway through. If you would honestly rather be anywhere else, you have your answer. Wanting to like someone is not the same as liking her, and a conversation does not become a spark because you stay longer.
One fair exception: nerves. If you are nervous and the date has just been quiet, give it a bit longer before deciding. Nerves pass. A flat feeling does not.
Plan your exit before you arrive
The easiest way to end a date you do not want is to have set its length in advance. A drink or a coffee has a natural end. A long dinner does not.
On dating apps, a short first meeting is normal, so suggest one: "Want to grab a coffee on Thursday?" a dating coach recommends keeping the date near your own place so you have options if it goes well. A short, close date also makes it easy to leave when it does not.
If you are already at a long dinner, you can still plan the end. When the plates are cleared, do not order dessert you do not want, and do not suggest another bar.
Say the sentence
When it is time to leave, be warm and brief. You can skip the second date talk entirely, or you can say it plainly.
- "I really enjoyed meeting you. I'm going to head out. Take care of yourself."
- "It was nice to meet you. I don't think we're a match, but I wish you the best."
The second is more direct. Use it if she asks about seeing you again, or if you suspect she is expecting a follow-up. A kind, direct sentence lets her move on with dignity.
If you hug, make it a friendly hug, not a long one. A kiss, a lingering touch or a "see you soon" tells her you are interested, so do not give mixed signals.
What not to say
Do not say "I'll text you" if you will not. That one line causes more pain than any honest sentence. She will wait, check her phone and wonder.
Do not make up a reason, like "I'm too busy right now." Do not say "let's be friends" unless you honestly want a friend. And do not give her a list of what was wrong, because nobody asked.
Stay kind until the very end
Pay your share or the check if you offered, and say thank you. Do not check your phone while she is still sitting there. If she is warm, be warm back.
You may feel the urge to rush because you are bored. Resist it. How you leave is what she will remember, and the circle of people she talks to is bigger than you think.
If you are interested, end it differently
This article is for the other situation, but one line is worth keeping in mind. If you liked her, end while the night is still going well, say you enjoyed it, and ask for a second date before you part. Either way, the rule is the same: be clear and do not leave her guessing.
What not to do on a first date
People search for this, and the list is short.
- Do not choose a loud place or a show. coach points out that at a movie, she talks to the screen, and at a comedy club, she talks to the comedian. A first date exists for the two of you to talk.
- Do not arrange a date far from where you live. If the date goes well, you want to be able to continue it.
- Do not interview her. A list of questions feels like a job screening. Talk about things, tell a story, and let it flow.
- Do not spend the evening complaining about your ex or your job.
- Do not stare at your phone.
- Do not drink too much.
What not to wear
Not a costume. Avoid clothes that do not fit, anything that is dirty or wrinkled, and anything you would feel silly in. My advice for dates is to have one or two outfits for first and second dates that you know fit well, and to copy how successful men in your city dress. The goal is to look like a man who made a small effort, not a man who is trying to be someone else.
After you leave
Do not send a text that says you had a great time if you did not. If she texts you, answer politely and honestly the next day, in a sentence or two. You can say, "Thanks again for meeting me. I don't think we're a fit, but I wish you well." That is the end of it.
