It depends on location services. If they are on in the browser you use, Badoo detects your location by GPS, and you cannot change it by hand. If they are off, you can set it yourself: tap the pencil icon to edit your details, scroll to Location, enter the new place and tap Save. Badoo is also not available in every country. A new location only helps in a place where Badoo runs.

The steps

With location services off:

  1. Go to your Profile.
  2. Tap the pencil icon.
  3. Scroll down to Location.
  4. Enter the new location.
  5. Tap Save.

If you cannot find a way to change it, check whether location services are still on. When they are, GPS decides, and the manual option is not open to you.

Why GPS wins

Badoo's rule is simple. When it can read where you are, it uses that, and the manual setting is for when it cannot.

That is a sensible rule, and it is worth working with rather than against. The women you see, and the women who see you, are meant to be near you. A location that matches where you really are is what makes a first date easy to arrange.

Good reasons to set it yourself

There are honest reasons to type a location in.

  • You are moving to a new city. Whenever a dating coach moves, he goes online in the new city about two weeks before he arrives. He lands with dates already lined up instead of spending his first weeks among boxes, wondering where people go out.
  • You are visiting somewhere for a few days. coach has done the same before a busy weekend away when he was still open to seeing someone.
  • GPS has you in the wrong place, and you want the right one.

What these have in common is that you will actually be there.

Timing matters as much as the place. Two weeks, My usual lead time, is long enough for a few conversations to turn into plans. It is also short enough that the women you talk to are still interested when you arrive. Set it months early and the chats go stale long before you land.

Do not use it to pretend

Setting a city you have no plan to visit is a bad idea. It wastes her time and yours, and a date that starts from a fib starts badly.

Badoo's own rules decide when you can change your location. Stay inside them, and use the setting to say where you will genuinely be. If Badoo is not available in the country you are heading to, no setting will change that, so plan on meeting people there some other way.

What to put in your first messages

If you are not there yet, say so early and plainly. Tell her when you arrive and suggest a plan for that week. Most women are far happier talking to a man who is honest about his timing than finding out later that he was in another city the whole time.

If she asks why you are turning up in her city, tell her the truth. You are moving there, or visiting for work, or coming for a weekend. It gives the two of you an easy thing to talk about, and it gives her a reason to make a plan with you for a specific day.

Keep the rest light. My view is that you start reading a woman from her photos and what she wrote, before you type a word, and that your first message and the early banter carry most of your appeal. So build the opener from one specific thing she shared, and keep it playful.

Then aim for a plan within a handful of messages, and her number once the plan exists. When you are arriving on a known day, the plan nearly writes itself: you get in on Thursday, so how about a drink on Friday.

Keep it close once you are there

Once you land, check your location again. If you set it by hand, make sure it still says where you are, and change it again when you move on.

Distance matters more than men think. coach puts real weight on keeping a first date close to your place or hers, because it makes the evening easy to plan and easy to extend if it goes well. A woman an hour's drive away is a harder first date to arrange, even when the conversation is great. The right location setting is the first step toward dates that are easy to say yes to.
