Tap Menu, then Dating, then Matches. Tap the photo of the person you want to block, tap Options in the top right, tap the Block option with their name on it, then tap Block to confirm. If you change your mind later, you can reverse it from Block people in Dating, inside your Dating privacy settings.
The steps
- Open the Facebook app, tap Menu, then tap Dating.
- Tap Matches.
- Tap the Dating profile picture of the person you want to block.
- Tap Options in the top right.
- Tap Block [their name] in Dating.
- Tap Block to confirm.
The whole thing takes about ten seconds. The decision behind it deserves a little longer.
How to unblock someone
- Go to Dating and tap Profile in the top right.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Privacy Settings.
- Tap Block people in Dating.
- Tap Unblock next to the person.
Unblocking exists for the rare case where you blocked in a hurry and regret it. It is not a door to reopen every few weeks. If you catch yourself blocking and unblocking the same woman, the button is not what needs fixing.
A Dating block stays in Dating
Facebook says blocking someone in Dating does not block them on Facebook or Messenger. If a woman you want gone can also reach you there, you have to block her in those places separately.
It works the other way on its own. Anyone you have already blocked on Facebook is blocked in Dating automatically. You never have to deal with the same person twice.
When a block is the right call
Most men block too late, not too early. In these cases, do not hesitate.
- Threats or abuse. Anything that makes you uneasy about your safety. Block, and report it as well.
- Scams. An account that steers you toward another site, an investment tip, a gift card or any request for money. No woman who wants a date opens with that.
- Someone who will not take no. You said once, clearly, that you were not interested. If the messages keep coming, the block says it for you.
- Your own weak moment. You ended something, and you know that at one in the morning you will want to write to her again. The standard advice for getting over a woman applies here: put as many walls as you can between yourself and that message. A block is one of those walls.
For the serious cases, take a screenshot of anything threatening first. Then report the account as well as blocking it. The report option sits in the same Options menu. A block protects you. A report gets Facebook to look at the account, which protects the next man it writes to as well.
When a polite goodbye works better
Plenty of conversations simply stop being worth it. She is fine, you are fine, and it is not going anywhere. That does not call for a block.
Send one short, kind line and leave it there. "I've enjoyed chatting, but I don't think we're the right fit. Good luck." It costs you nothing, it ends things cleanly, and nobody feels ambushed.
Letting a dead conversation go is normal on every dating app. Most of the women you talk to will never become dates, and that is how the whole thing is meant to work. Save the block for people who have earned it.
Do not block in a bad mood
If a woman sends you something rude, wait an hour before you do anything. Then scroll up and read your own last few lines as if a stranger had written them.
Sometimes the rudeness came from nowhere, and a block is fine. Sometimes it came from a joke that landed badly or a push for a date that came too early. That second case is worth learning from, because the same line will cost you with the next woman too.
Staying calm protects you as well. Women can report a man whose messages cross a line, and every angry reply is one more thing on the record. A man who stays polite, even while he blocks, gives nobody anything to report.
After you block
Move on straight away. Do not go looking for her anywhere else, and do not send an explanation first. A block says everything it needs to.
The best cure for one sour conversation is a few good ones, so put your attention on the women who are replying warmly.
Then get those good conversations off the app sooner. Once a chat is going well, ask for her number and suggest a specific evening. A conversation that lives only inside Dating is easy to lose, whether you delete the app or she deletes hers. A phone number and a plan are much harder to lose.
