Answer in one or two sentences, add one specific detail she can react to, and then hand the conversation back to her. That is the whole method. A woman from your dating app matches has already read your messages, so her questions are mostly her way of checking that the man in front of her matches the one she imagined.

The questions she will almost certainly ask

If you are wondering what the common first date questions are, they are fewer than you think. Nearly every first date includes some version of these:

  • What do you do for work?
  • What do you do for fun?
  • Where are you from?
  • Why are you single?
  • What are you looking for?
  • Tell me about your family, or your friends.

You do not need a rehearsed speech for each one. You need to know your honest answer well enough to say it in two sentences without hunting for words.

Answer the question, then add one thing

A plain answer is a dead end. "I work in logistics" gives her nothing to say next. A plain answer with one detail gives her a door.

Compare "I work in logistics" with "I work in logistics, which mostly means I find out why a truck is in the wrong city." The second one is still short. It is also funny, specific, and easy to respond to.

The same works for fun. "I like hiking" is a fact. "I hike most Sundays, and I have a bad habit of picking the trail based on the diner nearby" is a person.

Keep the detail small and true. You are not performing. You are giving her something to pick up.

Hand it back

Once you have answered, stop. Do not keep going to fill the silence. A short answer followed by a pause, or by a light "What about you?", lets her carry some of the date.

a dating coach's point about conversation is that a date is not an interview in either direction. When you answer at length you turn into a man giving a presentation. When you answer in a line and turn it toward her, it feels like two people talking.

The harder questions

A few questions carry more weight than they sound like.

Why are you single? She is checking whether something is wrong with you. Give a calm, brief answer with no bitterness: "I was in a long relationship that ended well, and I took some time. I am ready to meet someone now." Do not blame your ex or describe how bad dating has been.

What are you looking for? Be honest and keep it short. If you want a relationship, say so in a sentence. If you are not sure, say you are looking to meet someone you actually like and see where it goes. A long speech about marriage and your five-year plan on a first date sounds nervous.

Tell me about your last relationship. Give two sentences: what it was, why it ended, and what you took from it. Then change direction. If you can describe your ex without an insult, you pass the test she is really running.

Do not answer like a form

Men sometimes treat each question as a quiz with one correct answer. They pick the safe, polished answer, and the date goes flat.

A better habit is to answer in your own voice, even if it is a little rough. If she asks what you do for fun and you honestly spend most weekends cooking and watching football, say that. She is not grading you against a perfect man. She is deciding whether she would enjoy an evening with you.

Do not lie to look better

Do not inflate your job, your income, or your hobbies. A woman who has been messaging you for a week will notice when the dinner version of you does not match the version in your messages. A small exaggeration costs you more than it earns, because everything you say afterward gets checked against it.

If an answer is not flattering, say it plainly and move on. "I am between jobs right now, and I am working on a plan for it" is a stronger answer than a vague one that she can tell is covering something.

When you do not want to answer

You are allowed to skip a question that is too personal for a first date. You do not need to be rude about it. Smile and say, "That is a longer story, and I would rather hear yours first," then ask her something else. Answered lightly, this reads as confidence rather than hiding.

Practice the answers out loud

Say your answers to the six questions above once or twice before the date, out loud, in the car or the shower. The goal is not to memorize lines. It is to hear how long your answers run. Most men discover that their natural answer is much longer than they expected.

Trim each one to two sentences. On the date, you will find yourself relaxed instead of searching for words, and she will notice.
