You have to be 18 or older to use Tinder. Its help center sets the minimum age at 18, and its Community Guidelines repeat that you must be 18 or older to use the app. If Tinder restricts you at signup for not meeting that requirement, you cannot continue until you turn 18.

What the rule actually covers

The age requirement appears in two places, which tells you how seriously Tinder means it. The help center states the minimum. The Community Guidelines, the rules every member signs up to, state it again.

The restriction is plain about what happens next. Once Tinder has restricted you for not meeting the age requirement, signup stops there. It stays stopped until your 18th birthday.

So there is nothing here to work around. If you are 17, the answer is a date on the calendar.

If you are not 18 yet

Wait. That is the whole of the practical advice, and it is better advice than it sounds.

Typing in a false birthday puts your account on the wrong side of Tinder's rules from the first minute. It also means every conversation you start on the app rests on a lie. Neither is worth getting in a few months early.

Spend the time on the things that make the app work for you later. Get a friend to take some candid photos of you outside, doing something you genuinely do. Find clothes that fit you properly. a dating coach credits a lot of his own looks to style and grooming choices rather than to anything he was born with, and both are things a younger man can start on now.

And get comfortable talking to people in person. Every good conversation on an app eventually has to survive a real table and a real drink.

Why your real birthday matters later

Some men think about bending their age the other way. They add a few years to seem more established, or take a few off to land inside a range they imagine women want.

The trouble arrives on the date. She has pictured one man and meets another, and the first real thing she learns about you is that you were not straight with her. Nothing you say over the next hour quite fixes that.

The profile coaching guide on the female gaze makes the same argument about photos. You can present yourself well, but you cannot present yourself as somebody else, because she sees through it the moment you meet. The same goes for the number next to your name. Present the age you are, as well as it can be presented.

Make sure she is an adult too

The rule protects you as well. Tinder requires every member to be 18 or older, but a rule only works when people follow it.

If a match mentions her high school, her homeroom teacher or a curfew her parents set, stop the conversation there. Unmatch, and report the account in the app. That is not overreacting. It is the one step that keeps a harmless chat from turning into a serious problem for both of you.

What works at 18 and in your early twenties

Younger men often assume they are losing to older men with better jobs and nicer cars. Sometimes they are. More often they are losing to their own photos.

a dating coach names photos as the biggest mistake men make with online dating. At 18 that usually means a set of bathroom mirror selfies and one party shot where nobody can tell which face is yours. Replace them with a handful of recent, candid photos of you alone, out doing things, taken by someone else. The One Percent guides say candid shots that look like they came off an ordinary phone tend to beat staged ones, which is good news for anyone without a budget.

Then look at how you open. My rule for a first message is that it should be about her and give her something to react to. "Hey, how's your weekend" gives her nothing. A light guess about who she is, one she can agree with or push back on, gives her a reason to answer.

Before you start swiping

Enter your real birthday. Put your best recent photo first. Write two or three lines about your actual life that she could ask you about, and leave out the list of hobbies.

When a match turns into a conversation, steer it toward a plan. My point about app dating is simple. She is single, she is on the app to meet people, and she likes you at least a little. Days of chat that go nowhere only give her time to wonder why you have not asked, so suggest something easy and specific while the conversation is still fun.
