Hinge does not have one moment when a page flips to inactive. It has a ladder. After about a day of silence the Last Active label disappears. After 14 days a quiet chat is hidden. After two years without use, Hinge closes the account, and other members can no longer see the page. A woman can also pause her page herself at any time.
The first day
The Last Active status shows Active Now or Active Today on a page. It is not shown for someone who has not been active on the app in the past day. So the first signal of silence is the label going away, and it goes away fast.
That does not mean she left. It means she has not opened the app since yesterday. A woman with no label is a woman you cannot place in time, and nothing more than that.
Fourteen days
A chat with no activity for 14 days is moved automatically to the Hidden section of the Matches tab. If she sends you a message, it comes back to the top of your list.
This step is about the conversation, not about her page. A hidden chat means neither of you wrote for two weeks. It is a useful marker for you, since it tells you which conversations died, and it does not tell you she is gone from Hinge.
A pause is her choice
Hinge lets a woman pause her account at any time from Account Settings. A paused account stops being shown to people who have not seen her yet. She can keep chatting with the people she is already talking to, and pausing does not pause a subscription.
If you see a woman vanish from your feed with no explanation, a pause is one of the ordinary reasons. It does not mean she disliked your Like, and it can end the moment she unpauses.
Two years
Hinge's privacy policy says it closes an account on its own if you do not use it for two years. Once the account is closed, other members can no longer see the page.
That is the first point at which Hinge itself removes a page for being quiet. Everything before it is her choice or a change in a label. So a woman who has not logged in for six months is, by that description, still sitting in the pile.
Use the fourteen days for yourself
The 14-day rule is a good clock for your own follow-up. If a chat has been silent that long, Hinge has already hidden it. Send one light message that gives her an easy reason to answer, and if nothing comes back, let the chat sit.
Two or three more attempts do not change what the silence is telling you. They only turn a chat that ended quietly into one that ended awkwardly.
What this means for the woman you are waiting on
The honest answer to "is she still on here?" is that you usually cannot know from the page alone. Last Active is your best clue, and it only speaks to the last day. A page that looks fresh and a photo that looks recent do not tell you whether she is looking.
So treat each page as possibly active, and let her behavior tell you. A Like that is returned within a day or two is a live one. A Like that sits for a week, with no label on her page, is a long shot.
What to do with that
a dating coach's way of looking at online dating is a numbers game with a series of ratios, and he says the way to win a numbers game is to put your effort where responses come from. Applied here, that means spending your attention on women who appear active and answering the Likes you receive promptly.
Do not wait on a single woman to wake up. Send the Like, move on to the next page, and come back if she answers. A man who stops everything for one maybe loses the whole week.
Your own page
All the same rules apply to you. If you go quiet, your label disappears after a day and your chats slide into Hidden after 14. Come back after a long break and give your old chats a quick look, since most of them will be sitting in Hidden.
If you plan to step away, pause the account so you are not shown to people you will not answer. When you return, check that your photos and your answers still look like the man you are now. A page that has been quiet for a while is a good reason to freshen the first photo before you restart.
