Go to pof.com and click Sign up, or download the app by searching for Plenty of Fish in the App Store or Google Play. Every account is registered with a phone number, so you will be asked for an SMS verification code. You also need a photo before you can send messages or get matches. You must be at least 18 and cannot already have another account.

Before you tap Sign up

Get two things ready first. Have your phone beside you so you can read the SMS code, and have your best photos saved where you can reach them.

Men who sign up first and look for photos afterward tend to upload whatever is on top of the camera roll. Five minutes of choosing ahead of time is the cheapest improvement you will make.

The two ways in

Plenty of Fish has a Sign up button on its homepage at pof.com. That is the route if you want to start on a computer or in a phone browser.

The other route is the app. Search for Plenty of Fish in the App Store on an iPhone, or in Google Play on an Android, and download it. Either way you end up at the same sign-up.

Pick the one you will actually open every day. The men who get dates from these apps are the ones who check them steadily, and a habit is easier to build on the device you already carry.

Your phone number does the verifying

POF registers every account with a phone number, and only one number is supported per account. During sign-up it sends an SMS code, and you type that code in to finish.

Use a number that belongs to you and that you plan to keep, since the account is tied to it.

If the code does not arrive, a separate article covers what to check, including numbers that cannot receive a text at all.

Who can sign up

You must be at least 18 years old, and you cannot already have another account on Plenty of Fish. POF does not allow two.

That second rule matters more than it looks. A man whose first account went badly may be tempted to open a second to start fresh, and that is the move POF's terms rule out. If you want a fresh start, deal with the old account first.

The photo you need before anyone can hear from you

A profile photo is required before you can message or match with other members. Until you add one, the account can look around but not connect.

POF also says new members may be asked to upload a photo that clearly shows their face, so its age check can confirm they are over 18. That is one more reason to use a recent, clear picture of you on your first try, rather than a cropped group shot or a distant photo.

Treat the photo as the main job of your first evening. Women judge a man by his weakest picture, so use ones where your face is easy to see, the light is good, and nobody else is in the frame.

Getting your date of birth right

The date of birth on a new account can only be corrected during the first two weeks of membership. After that, it is fixed.

Type it slowly, and check it before you tap Continue. A mistyped year looks like a small thing, and then it follows you around the app.

Swipe with standards in the first week

The sign-up takes minutes. The first week decides whether the account works.

Add several clear photos, not one, and write a few real details about your life, something a woman could reply to. Then be selective in Meet Me. a dating coach's experience is that an app which watches a man say yes to nearly everyone concludes he has no standards, and then shows him fewer of the women he wants. Swipe right on women you would genuinely ask out.

When one likes you back, write to her that day. Pick one real detail from her page, say something about it, and end on a question she can answer in a line.

Keep your sessions short and regular. And hold off on paying for anything until you have seen what the free version gives you. My advice is to test, tweak and test some more, because a paid feature only makes whatever you already have bigger.

Keep the goal in view

An account is only a door. The goal is a drink with a woman you like, and the faster you get there, the better it goes.

After a few warm exchanges, stop messaging and suggest a specific place and a specific evening. A man who does that in the first week has used the app better than one who sends two hundred messages and never asks.
