You cannot sort your Matches tab by a setting. Hinge's help pages list no option for choosing the order of your conversations. What you can do is hide the chats you do not want in front of you, and let Hinge's Your Turn reminder point you to the ones that need an answer. Between those two moves, you control more than it looks like.

What the sort options really sort

The sort options men notice sit on the Likes You tab. They apply to your incoming likes, not to your conversations. Options such as Your Type and Recent are available there, and Hinge+ and HingeX subscribers also get Last Active and Nearby.

So if you went looking for a sort menu on your list of matches, that is why you did not find one. The menu you are thinking of is real, but it belongs to a different screen.

Hide a chat to move it out of the way

The one lever you hold over the list is Hide. Open the chat, tap the three dots in the top right of the conversation, and choose Hide. The chat moves to the Hidden section at the bottom of your Matches tab.

Nobody is unmatched when you do this. She stays a match, and you can open the chat again whenever you want.

Hidden chats come back by themselves

If a woman you hid sends you a message, Hinge brings her back to the top of your list automatically. You do not have to remember her, and you do not lose the chance to reply.

Hinge also hides chats on its own. A match with no activity for 14 days is moved to Hidden automatically, and you can unhide it from the same menu at any time. A crowded Hidden section is useful information: it shows you how many conversations went nowhere.

Use Your Turn to answer later

Hinge's Your Turn feature reminds you when it is your turn to reply. If you want to answer a particular chat later, slide it to the left and tap Hide. It leaves your main view without disappearing, and it returns when she writes again.

The point of this is not tidiness. It is that the women at the top of your list are the ones you intend to talk to today, and the order of the rest does not matter.

Why order matters for how you date

A long, jumbled list is a quiet way of losing women. When fifteen conversations sit in front of you and half of them are dead, the live ones get a late, rushed answer. A woman who waits a long time for a reply has less reason to stay interested.

a dating coach's framing of online dating is a chain of steps where each step loses some people. The chain only works if the women who answer you get answered quickly. That is the job of your list. Keeping it short does more for your results than any sort option would.

Bringing a hidden woman back on purpose

Sometimes you hide a chat to answer later, and later arrives. Open the Hidden section at the bottom of your Matches tab, pick the chat, and unhide it from the three dots menu. Then send one good line that refers to something she actually said.

Do not send an apology for the wait that runs three sentences. One short, easy question gets a reply far more often than a long explanation does.

A simple routine

Once a day, open Matches and look at the top. Answer anyone waiting on you. Then hide any chat that has clearly died, and any chat you decided you do not want to continue. Keep the women you are actively planning to meet at the top by replying to them first.

When a chat has reached the point where a phone number or a date is the next step, ask for it instead of letting the conversation sit. A woman who has been chatting happily for three days wants either a plan or a reason to lose interest.

What not to do

Do not unmatch to clean up your list. Unmatching is permanent, and Hinge cannot restore a match on its end. Hide does the same tidy-up without the finality.

Do not stack up unread chats on purpose because you want to feel popular. A full list that nobody gets answered on is a worse position than a short one where every woman gets a good reply.

The order of your matches is not yours to set, but the length of your list is. Keep it short, answer quickly, and let Hide do the sorting you cannot do any other way.
