Walk up, smile, say hello, and tell her in one simple sentence what made you stop. Use easy words, speak a little slower than normal, and let your face do half the work. If a few words of Spanish or Portuguese come out of your mouth, even badly, she will usually take it as effort and not as a performance.

That is the whole approach. The rest of this article covers the details that change how it lands. That means your first line, your body language, what to do when language is a problem, and why the label "Latina" should not become your whole plan.

Start with the woman, not the label

"Latina" covers women from Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Argentina, Cuba and a dozen other countries. These women grew up in different cities and speak different kinds of Spanish, while Brazilians speak Portuguese. A woman in Miami whose family left Cuba long ago and a woman visiting Mexico City from Monterrey have very little in common beyond the word on the form.

So do not walk up with a script about what "they" like. The man who opens with a speech about how much he loves Latina women has told her she is a type to him. The man who says "you walked past with the most relaxed face on the street, I had to say hi" has told her he noticed her. The second one gets a conversation far more often.

a dating coach sets the bar for a good approach very low on purpose: walk up to her and say something. Being a friendly man who stopped to talk is enough for the first few seconds. Everything else comes after that.

Keep the words simple and the face warm

If you are in a Spanish-speaking city, or in a neighborhood where English is her second language, assume she may not catch fast, clever English. Short sentences work best. "Hi, I'm Dan. I saw you from across the street and wanted to say hello." Nothing in that needs translating.

Then use your body. Smile for real. Keep your hands out of your pockets and open when you talk. Look at her while you speak, not at your phone and not at the floor. Warm tone and steady eye contact carry more than the exact words, and they work in any language.

If she speaks little English, a translation app is fine for logistics: where you are from, what time, which cafe. It is a poor tool for flirting, because nobody feels anything while a phone reads a joke out loud. For the flirting, use short phrases, a grin and eye contact.

Use her language for the opener only

Learn three or four lines before you travel or before you go out in a Spanish-speaking neighborhood. A greeting, "my name is," "what is your name," and "can I take you for a coffee" cover most of it. Say them calmly. If you mangle one, laugh at yourself and move on, because a man who can be bad at something in front of a stranger comes across as secure.

Do not pretend to be fluent. Do not drop in slang you picked up from a video. Nothing makes a conversation stall faster than a line you cannot follow up when she answers.

Skip the culture lecture

Some men read that a whole group of women wants a particular kind of man and then try to play that part. It backfires, because it makes you sound rehearsed. Every woman you meet is a person with her own taste, her own mood that day and her own reasons for stopping to talk or not.

What does carry over is ordinary good manners. Be respectful. Be curious about where she is from and what she likes about her city. Ask her to teach you a word, since people enjoy being the expert. Pay attention to whether she leans in or steps back, and adjust.

If you are an Asian man, a shorter man or anyone who worries the label will count against him, the answer is the same. Present yourself well, be warm, and make a clear but relaxed request. Each woman decides for herself, and you get that decision only by asking.

Finish the approach cleanly

After a few minutes of real conversation, say what you want in plain words. "I would like to see you again. Can I get your number?" Hand her your phone so she can type it in, then say goodbye and leave while it is still going well.

If she says no, thank her and go. A calm exit is part of the skill, and it is the part that lets you walk up to the next woman without carrying the last one with you.

How to practice the first thirty seconds

Most men do not lose these approaches because of language. They lose them because they hesitate for ten minutes, then walk over stiff. Both are fixed by repetition with someone watching.

On a Cold Approach Bootcamp, which runs in Miami and New York, every training day has two four-hour blocks in the field. A coach is next to you for live coaching on every approach and gives feedback after every set. That includes the first line, your tone, your pace and what to do when the woman answers in another language. Group is three consecutive days at three students per coach. Private is 1-on-1 for one, two or three days. There is no skill floor, so a man who has never approached a woman starts the same way as anyone else, and you leave with a written practice plan.
