Boo starts with a free personality test that places you in one of 16 personality types. It then tells you which types you are likely to be compatible with. On the Match page you Love or Pass on the people it shows you. A Love lands in her inbox as a request, and once you have both sent love, you are matched and can message each other.
The personality test
Everything on Boo begins with the test. It is free, it is short, and at the end you get your type, one of sixteen.
Boo then tells you which personalities you are likely to click with. That is what sets Boo apart. Rather than starting from nothing, you begin with a guess about who might suit you.
Take the test honestly. Answer the way you actually behave, not the way you wish you did. A flattering type that does not fit you only steers you toward women who will be puzzled when they meet the real thing.
Love, Pass and the request inbox
The Match page is where you decide. For each person, you either Love them or Pass.
A Love is not a match yet. It goes to her inbox as a request. If she sends love back, you are matched, and the two of you can message each other.
That makes each Love a small first impression. She sees that you are interested, then decides whether she is too. So the rest of your page has to back it up, starting with your lead photo.
What a personality type is good for
A type is a decent starting point. It can point you toward women you might not have noticed, and it gives you both something to talk about from the first line.
It also helps to remember that a type can change. a dating coach is a natural introvert. He took an introversion test in college and came out strongly on the introverted side. Years of coaching later, his answers had moved much closer to the middle. His point is that you do not have to stay one fixed thing if you do not want to.
So hold your type loosely, and hold hers loosely too. It describes how someone answered a set of questions on one day. It is not a promise about how an evening with her will go.
Why attraction still comes first
coach has a warning that fits Boo perfectly. In his experience, shared traits mean very little to a woman until she already likes you. Once she likes you, she goes looking for things you share, because she wants it to work. Before that, common ground does very little.
He has also seen men put their Myers-Briggs type on their dating page. His view is that this is fine as a footnote at the bottom, and silly as the thing you lead with.
On Boo, personality is already built into how the app works, so you do not need to lean on it as well. Let your photos and the way you write do the attracting. Let the type be the icing.
Turning a type into a first message
This is where personality types can really help you.
coach wants a first message to be about her, with something in it she can react to. One format he likes is the mini cold read, a playful guess that she is one kind of girl but also its opposite. A personality app hands you the raw material for that. You might tell a woman whose type is famous for planning that she seems like someone with a spreadsheet for her weekends who secretly books everything last minute.
It is aimed at her, it teases, and she will want to correct you. That is a conversation, not an interview.
What to avoid is making the whole chat about types. Two people swapping theories about their letters can go on for days and never become a date.
From match to a date
Once you are matched, remember what the app is for. She is there because she wants to go on dates, and she sent love back, so she likes you at least a little.
My aim is to get off the app and onto a date without weeks of small talk. Start with something about her, trade a few playful lines, and watch for her joining in with your teasing. That is the moment to suggest something loose, like a drink sometime, and swap numbers.
The best test of compatibility is not a chart. It is an hour sitting next to each other somewhere with good music, and that is the one to aim for.
