You landed six weeks ago. The flat is sorted and the job has started, and the part nobody warned you about is the evenings. Everyone you would have called is in another time zone, and the friends still here have wives, children and a standing Sunday thing you are not part of yet.
So the apps become the obvious answer. Then they do not work, and it is easy to read that as evidence that you came back to a city with nothing in it for you.
You are running two rebuilds at once
Here is what is actually happening. You are rebuilding a social life and a dating life at the same time, and normally the two carry each other.
In a settled life the dating is downstream of the social. You meet people through people, and the apps are a supplement to a life that is already introducing you to women at a low background rate.
Back from abroad, that background rate is zero. The apps are not a supplement any more, they are the whole thing, and they are being asked to carry a load they were never carrying the last time you used them. Meanwhile the social rebuild is eating the exact evenings you would have spent on them.
That is not a city with nothing in it. That is two full time projects and one calendar.
What the years away did to your profile
Open your photos and look at them the way a stranger would.
Most of them are from somewhere else. The good ones are on a terrace in a country you no longer live in, in weather that does not happen here, often with people she will never meet. Individually they are fine photographs. Together they say you are visiting.
The written lines have the same problem. References that landed with everyone in your last city land with nobody in this one. The answer to what you do at the weekend still describes weekends you had abroad, because the new ones have not happened yet.
And the honest bit in the middle, where you mention you have just moved back, is usually written as an apology. She reads it as a man who is unsettled and might well leave again.
None of that is a character problem. It is a profile documenting the life before this one.
The geography you have not learned yet
There is a smaller and more annoying version of the same thing.
To turn a conversation into a date you have to suggest somewhere. Somewhere near where she actually is, on a night that works, that is a reasonable place to meet a stranger for a drink. In a city you know, that is automatic. In a city you left at twenty-five and came back to at thirty-five, half the places you remember have closed and the rest are in the wrong part of town.
So the ask goes vague. Vague asks do not turn into dates, and a returning man can spend his first six months making them and wondering why nothing lands.
What the rebuild actually takes
New photographs first, made now, that look like a man who lives here. Then the writing redone so the years away read as interesting rather than temporary, because they are interesting, and so the line about being back reads as settled rather than apologetic.
Then the daily running. The apps show you to people while you are active and stop when you are not, and your first months back are exactly when you are least available, because you are assembling a life. That is the stretch where most returning men let the accounts go dark, at the precise point where the accounts are the only thing introducing them to anybody.
Then the asking. Somebody has to work out where she actually is and propose a specific place near her at a specific time, instead of leaving it at drinks sometime.
What we take, and what stays yours
The Online Dating Concierge is our done-for-you service. Our team redoes your dating photos and your whole profile first, built from ordinary selfies you send in, so no photo shoot lands on a man who has just moved house. Then the apps get run, on every app you want to be on, the selective ones included, on the accounts you already have.
Interest gets read against the terms you set rather than against whatever the app puts in front of you. The conversations worth carrying get carried in a register that sounds like you. The evenings get proposed at a specific place near her, which is the part you currently cannot do quickly. And the work carries on through the weeks where your own life is taking every hour you have.
What stays yours is who you want to meet, and the evening itself.
The first year back is the case for it
Men in your position often decide to wait. Get settled, build the friendships, start dating properly in a year when there is room for it.
It is an understandable plan and it costs you the year. The apps do not reward being paused, and twelve months from now you will be starting from a dead account and the same set of photographs from a country you no longer live in.
The promise attached to it is narrow and plain. Your first date within a week, or we keep working. From there the target is 2-3 dates each week, which is also, as it happens, the fastest way any man builds a life in a city again.
If you are back, starting from nobody, and your apps are full of somewhere else, see if you qualify and we will go through what the Online Dating Concierge would rebuild first.
