The best dating advice for a man in his 20s is to use the access you have right now. You are surrounded by single women your own age, you can fail cheaply, and nobody expects you to have it figured out. Spend the decade getting good at talking to women, building a life she would want to be part of, and saying plainly what you are looking for. Do not spend it waiting to feel ready.
You will never be this close to this many single women again
coach makes a point that sounds obvious until you lose it. In school and in your early 20s you are around eligible women constantly. Your friends are single, you all go out, and your coworkers are in the same boat. By your 30s and 40s most friends are married, the nights out shrink, and you have to go find women on purpose.
So the advice for a man in his 20s is the reverse of what most do. Do not coast on that access. Use it while it comes free. Say yes to the party, the friend of a friend, the class, the group trip. Every one of those is a chance to talk to someone you would not otherwise meet.
Get your reps early
Nobody is naturally good at this. The men who are comfortable with women at 28 are the ones who talked to a lot of women at 22 and survived the awkward ones.
That means starting conversations in daylight, asking for numbers, and asking people out, before you feel confident. Early reps are cheap. A rejection at 22 costs you an uncomfortable minute. The same fear carried to 35 costs you a lot more, because you now have thirteen years of avoidance to undo.
Rejection is part of the process, not a verdict. Expect most of what you try to go nowhere, and judge yourself on how many times you tried.
Build the life, then invite her into it
Women are not only reacting to your face. They are guessing what an ordinary week with you looks like. My advice for men in relationships is the same one that applies earlier: keep stepping up, and put the energy you spend worrying about girls into your work, your fitness and your friends.
Pick one thing in each area and improve it this year. A skill at work, a lift you are working toward, a weekly dinner with friends. A man with a direction is interesting on a date without trying, because he has something real to talk about.
Do not hand your whole life to the first girlfriend
It is easy to fall into the first relationship that is offered to you, especially if you have not had many. Some of those turn out well. A lot of them are a man picking the first person who was kind to him.
Before you commit, you should have dated enough people to know what you like. That does not mean treating women as practice. It means going on real dates, being honest, and not deciding who you are with after one lonely winter.
Once you are in a relationship, do not go lazy. My warning is that a man shows a woman his best to win her, then shows her his worst once she is his, and then expects her to remember the first version. Keep planning dates and keep doing the things she liked about you.
Say what you want
Many men in their 20s are vague about what they are after, and so are the women they date. The result is a few months of confusing texts and an awkward ending.
Whatever you want, say it in plain words within the first few dates. If you want something serious, say you are looking for a girlfriend. If you want to keep things light, say that too. coach points out that everything you do tells her what role you are offering: how you act, how you talk about the future, and whether you introduce her to your friends. Make those signals match your words, and nobody is blindsided.
Be careful whose advice you take
Most of what circulates online about dating in your 20s comes from men who have not done much of it, or from people selling something. Look for advice from someone who has actually dated, who explains why a thing works, and who tells you about the failures too.
Test what you read the cheap way. Try one idea this week in a real conversation. If it helps, keep it. If it does not, drop it. Advice you have never tried in public is only opinion.
A short plan for the next ninety days
- Talk to one new woman a day in a low-stakes place, such as a store, a class or a friend's party.
- Ask two of them to coffee or a walk.
- Pick one area of your life and improve it measurably.
- Go on every date you get offered, and be honest on all of them.
That is enough. Do it for a few months and you will notice something odd: women stop seeming mysterious and start seeming like people you can talk to.
