POF's help center does not describe a button called unmatch. The way it describes cutting someone off is blocking: a blocked member can no longer message you, and you stop seeing her in your matches, such as Meet Me. You can also delete a whole conversation from your inbox. The steps POF gives for both do not mention a paid upgrade.

What blocking does

Blocking is the closest thing to an unmatch, and it is the one POF documents.

A blocked member can no longer message you. You also stop seeing her in your matches, including in Meet Me, so she will not come back around in your swiping.

There is one cost to know before you tap it. If you block someone you have already messaged, blocking deletes your chat history with her. The conversation does not stay behind in your inbox.

How to block

In the app, open the chat or her page, and tap the shield with a heart icon to open the Safety Toolbox. Then tap Block or Report.

On the website, click the horizontal dots and choose Block This Person.

Both routes lead to the same result, so use whichever device is in your hand. A separate article walks through blocking and unblocking in more detail. It also explains why reversing a block takes a desktop computer.

What deleting a conversation does

Deleting is the quieter option. You remove a whole conversation from your inbox, and POF says the deletion is permanent.

The difference from a block is in what happens next. After you delete a conversation, only new messages from that member will show if she writes to you again. So deleting clears your inbox, but it does not stop her from writing.

That makes deleting the right tool when you only want the clutter gone. If you are being messaged by someone you no longer want to hear from, it is the wrong one.

Which one to use

Think about what you actually want to stop.

If you want her gone for good, block her. She cannot message you, and she stops appearing in your matches.

If you only want a tidy inbox and do not mind hearing from her again, delete the conversation.

If neither applies and the conversation has simply gone flat, you do not need either. Stop writing, and put the time into women whose replies are getting longer.

Save what matters first

Blocking deletes your chat history with someone you have messaged. Deleting a conversation is permanent. So the order of operations matters.

If the conversation holds something you need, copy it out before you cut anything off. That might be a time and place you agreed on, a number she gave you, or a name you want to remember. Take a screenshot first, and block or delete second.

Unblocking, and why to be sure first

POF lets you unblock only from the Plenty of Fish website on a desktop computer. You find it under Edit Profile, then Settings.

That is an awkward place to have to go back to, which is a good reason to treat a block as a decision. Men often block in a flash of irritation after one short reply, then wish the conversation back. Since a block also deletes the chat, undoing it gives you an empty conversation and not the old one.

When to cut someone off, and when to just move on

There is a difference between a woman who needs to be blocked and one who has simply lost interest.

Block anyone who asks you for money, pushes you to another site, sends hostile messages, or makes you feel unsafe. You do not owe those conversations a polite ending.

For everyone else, ordinary disappointment is part of how these apps work. A woman who replies in one line, takes three days, or says she is busy this week is telling you she is not very interested. You do not need to unmatch her to make that true. Stop investing and move on to the next conversation.

This matters more than it seems. a dating coach's view is that a man should be selective about whom he swipes on and then give the women he picked real attention. A long list of lukewarm conversations feels like activity, but it keeps you from the one or two that are actually going somewhere.

Before you block someone who is not a danger, ask whether you are cleaning up your inbox or reacting to a bad evening. If it is the second, wait until tomorrow. The block will still be there.
