Yes. A comment is part of the like it came with, so you read it when you look at that like, and you do not need Hinge+ or HingeX to do it. What paying changes is how many likes you see at once. Free members view one incoming like at a time and choose to match or skip.
Where comments show up
Incoming likes land in the Likes You tab. A woman can add a comment when she likes one of your photos or prompts, so some of the likes in that tab carry a line from her.
Hinge's help pages describe the comment as part of the like itself. Nothing in them treats it as an extra you buy. You open the like, you read what she wrote, and then you choose to match or skip.
What free members get and what subscribers get
The difference is pace, not content.
A free member works through incoming likes one at a time. Each woman comes up on her own with whatever she wrote, and you decide before the next one appears.
Hinge+ and HingeX subscribers can see everyone who has liked them at once. That is a real time saver if likes arrive faster than you can answer them. It does not change what any single comment says.
The comment you cannot see at first
There is one case where a comment does not appear in the normal flow. Hinge has a setting called Comment Filter. When it catches a comment, the like does not appear as usual. It shows only as Comment Hidden in a category called Hidden Likes.
You can still read it. Tap into that profile and the full comment is there, and you can match, skip or report. You do not pay for that either. If the comment is crude or insulting, report it and move on. Nobody is owed a reply for rudeness.
To change what gets caught, open Settings, then Safety, then Comment Filter. From there you can turn Auto Filter on or off and add your own custom words. If you keep the default on, check Hidden Likes once in a while. A clumsy but harmless joke can trip a filter, so a good woman might be sitting in there.
Use the comment, it is the easiest opener you will get
A woman who comments has handed you a way in. She chose that photo or prompt, and she chose a line to say about it.
Read a comment as information about her. A specific line about one of your photos or answers shows she looked at your page properly. A one-word comment shows she is moving fast. Neither is good or bad, but it tells you how much effort to put into your first reply.
Reply to it. Your first message should answer what she wrote, add a small piece of your own, and leave her something easy to answer. Sending a bare hello to a woman who took the trouble to write a comment wastes the one advantage you were given.
a dating coach's own first-message method works the same way. He scrolls through her page, finds something unusual to comment on, and teases if he can. When she has already commented on you, she has done half of that work.
Do not pay just to read comments
Because comments are free, they are a poor reason to subscribe.
The real reasons to subscribe are speed and reach. If more likes arrive than you can sort one at a time, seeing everyone at once is worth money. If you want more women to see your page, the higher tier is built for that. If only a few likes come in each week, you are seeing the same few either way.
My view is that a strong bias against ever paying is a hindrance, and that a paid feature is worth testing if it makes a real difference. Test it on your own numbers: likes sent, matches back, conversations that reach a date. If the numbers do not move, do not renew.
Make your own comments readable
The same filter that hides a comment from you applies to the comments you send. A like whose comment trips a woman's filter goes to her Hidden Likes with no notification, and Hinge says the sender is not told.
So write comments no filter would object to. Leave out remarks about her body and anything crude. Specific, playful lines are safe and they also work better. Point at one thing she wrote or showed, say one thing about it, and stop.
The short answer
You can see comments on Hinge without paying. The comment is part of each like, and free members read them one like at a time. Hinge+ and HingeX add seeing every like at once.
A comment caught by Comment Filter sits in Hidden Likes as Comment Hidden, and tapping in shows it in full. Answer the comments that deserve it, and write your own so they never get filtered.
