Not with one switch. Hinge's help pages describe no private-profile setting. What it gives you instead is four separate controls. A Visible on Profile toggle handles individual details. A Block List handles specific people. Pause handles everyone new. A fourth setting hides your Last Active status. Which one you want depends on who you are trying to keep out.

Hiding individual details

When you edit your profile, each detail has a Visible on Profile square. Tap it to hide that detail, such as your height or whether you drink. Hinge's help article lists what you can control this way, and it works detail by detail, not as a whole-page lock.

This is the control for a man who is comfortable being seen but does not want a particular fact on display.

Keeping out specific people

Block List is for people you know. You can share your phone contacts, or enter a phone number or email by hand, and Hinge does its best to prevent you and that person from seeing each other. You find it by tapping your profile icon, going to Settings, and choosing Block List. The people you block are not notified.

There is one limit worth knowing. If the contact information you enter does not match what the other person used to sign up, Hinge says it cannot stop you from seeing each other. So it is a strong filter that can still miss, for example when she signed up with a different number than the one in your phone.

Blocking a contact also does not affect your existing matches or messages.

Stopping new people from seeing you

Pause is the closest thing to a private mode. When you pause your account in Settings, you stop being shown to new people, and you can still chat with the matches you already have.

Two details matter. Someone you liked before you paused can still receive your like and match with you. And pausing is meant as a break, so it is a better fit for a man who needs a rest than for one who wants to stay on the app but unseen.

Hiding when you were last active

You can hide your Last Active status in Settings. Your matches never see your Last Active status in any case. If you hide yours, though, you cannot see anyone else's.

This one is about not signaling when you were last on the app. It does nothing to hide the profile itself.

What stays visible no matter what

Even with all of these on, a profile that is live is still a profile women can see. If you are shown to someone and she looks at you, she sees your photos, your prompts and whatever details you left visible.

Also note how likes work. After you send a like, Hinge says you will not see that profile again unless she chooses to match with you. That is a quirk of the app, not a privacy feature, and it does not hide you from her.

Choosing the right control

If the worry is a coworker, an ex or a neighbour, use Block List.

If the worry is a specific fact about you, hide that detail.

If the worry is being seen by strangers at all, pause the account until you are ready.

If the worry is looking like you are always online, hide Last Active.

Many men ask for a private profile when what they actually want is one that is good enough that being seen is not a problem. If the thought of a friend finding your page makes you wince, that is worth listening to, and the fix is usually the photos or the prompt answers, not another privacy control.

A note on how much to hide

It is tempting to hide most of the details so that nothing can be used against you. A page with every detail hidden tells her very little, and a woman deciding in a few seconds has less to go on. Hide the one or two you have a real reason to, and leave the rest.
