Sometimes, in a limited way. A reverse image search can show where a photo appears on the public web, and that can reveal whether a dating profile is real. But dating apps keep their pages inside the app, so searching with a photo will not reliably return someone's profile. The fair use is checking a match, not hunting a person down. If you meant where to find pictures for your own profile, that is the last section.
What a reverse image search does
You upload a picture, or paste its address, and the search tool looks for the same or very similar pictures that exist publicly online. It returns pages where that image appears.
That is all. It does not look inside private accounts, and it does not search any dating app's members. If a photo has never been posted anywhere public, the search finds nothing, which does not prove it is genuine. Results are also imperfect in both directions. A cropped or edited picture can slip past a search. A common stock image can match dozens of pages that have nothing to do with the person you are checking. Treat a hit as a lead to follow, not as proof.
Why you cannot search a dating app by photo
Most dating apps show a page only to members who are logged in. The ones we know of do not offer a way to upload a photo and get a person back, and you should not count on any app doing so. Search engines also do not usually list dating profiles, so a general search with a photo rarely lands on one.
That is a protection for everyone on the apps, you included. It means a stranger cannot take a picture of you in a bar and find your page.
The fair use: checking that a profile is real
The legitimate reason to run a photo through a reverse image search is to check that the woman in it is who she says. Take a screenshot of a photo from a match, search it, and look at what comes up.
If the same picture appears under a different name, on a model's public page, or in a stock gallery, you have found a fake. If it turns up on a social account with her name and a similar life, that is a good sign. If nothing comes up at all, that is neutral.
It is a quick check. Do it before you spend a week on a conversation, especially if the pictures look unusually polished or she is vague about her life.
The use to skip
Do not use the same tool to track down a woman who did not give you her details. A woman who unmatched you, did not reply or has not shared her last name has told you where the line is.
Searching for more than she gave you reads as unsettling when she finds out, and it often does come out. It also tends to end the one thing you want from a match, which is a comfortable first date.
The same trick works on your own pictures
Anyone can run your photos through the same search. If a picture of yours sits on your public social media, a stranger can trace it back to your name, your friends and your workplace.
If you want your dating life kept separate from the rest, use pictures that live only on your dating page. Take new ones for the purpose rather than reusing something from a public account.
Where to find photos for your own profile
Many men who type this question mean something else: where can I find profile pictures to use? The answer is that you already have most of them, and the rest are easy to get.
Go through your own camera roll and the pictures friends sent you after trips and events. Look for clear shots in daylight with your face visible, taken in the last year or two. Ask a friend with a phone to take a dozen more outdoors near a window or in open shade, and choose the best.
Never take pictures from someone else's page or from the web. They are not yours to use, and a borrowed face collapses on the first date.
If the camera roll is thin and nobody you know has a free afternoon, our team can build a set for you from the selfies you already have. Whichever way you get there, the goal is the same: a few recent pictures that show the man who will turn up, with your face easy to see in the first.
