Yes. Open the Google Play Store on your Android phone, search for Plenty of Fish, and download the app straight to the device. You can also start the install from a computer, and if you would rather not install anything, POF works in a mobile or desktop browser at POF.com. The download takes a minute. Getting matches and messages out of it takes a plan, which is the second half of this article.

The direct route: Google Play on the phone

This is the one most men use, and POF's help center describes it the same way. On Android you find Plenty of Fish in the Google Play Store and download it directly to your phone. On an iPhone the same app comes from the App Store.

Type the full name into the search box and look at the name on the listing before you tap Install. A dating app is something you will hand a phone number and a face photo to, so it is worth thirty seconds to make sure you picked the one you meant to pick.

Once the download finishes, open the app and sign up or log in. If you have never had an account, the sign-up steps are covered in a separate article, and the short version is that you will be asked for a phone number and a photo.

Starting the install from a computer

If you are already sitting at a computer, you do not have to reach for the phone first. POF's help center says that when you are logged into the same Google account on the PC and on the phone, the Play Store shows an Install option that lists your connected devices. You pick the phone, and the app installs onto it.

This is handy in one specific case: the phone is across the room, or you want the app on a second device. The only real requirement is that both devices use the same Google account. If the phone you want does not show up in the list, check which account each device is signed in to before you try anything else.

Using POF.com instead of the app

You do not have to install anything at all. POF says members can use Plenty of Fish in a mobile browser or a desktop browser at POF.com.

That is a fair choice if your phone is short on space, if you do not want another icon on your home screen, or if you would rather keep dating apps out of your pocket. Some account tools also live on the website, so a man who uses the app will end up on POF.com now and then anyway.

The browser does not make the app any better or worse for getting dates. What matters is which one you will open every day, because the men who do well on these apps are the ones who show up steadily.

How to swipe in the first week

The download is the easy part. Most of the result comes from what you do in the first few days.

Start with the photos, because they decide almost everything. Women judge a man by his weakest picture, so one blurry shot or one group photo where she cannot tell which one is you can sink the rest. Put up clear pictures where your face is easy to see and nobody else is in the frame.

Then be selective in Meet Me. a dating coach's experience is that an app which watches a man say yes to nearly everyone reads him as a man with no standards. It stops showing him the women other men are competing for. Swipe right on women you would genuinely ask out, and pass on the rest.

Keep your sessions short and regular. Ten focused minutes a day beats a three-hour binge on Sunday, because a binge leaves you with ten conversations that all want an answer on the same night.

Test before you pay for anything

Plenty of Fish has paid tiers, and the app will show you what they add. Do not buy one in the first week.

My rule for online dating is to test, tweak and test again. Use the free version for a couple of weeks, change one thing at a time, and watch what happens. Then you know whether you are starting from some replies or none. A paid tier makes whatever you already have bigger. If you have good results, that is worth paying for. If you have no results, it only makes the silence louder.

When the app is not the problem

Men often download an app, get no replies for a week, and decide the app is bad. Usually the app is fine. Three things are wrong: the photos, the first message, or the selection.

A first message that works picks one real detail from her page, says something about it, and ends with a question she can answer in a line. "Hey" gives her nothing to work with, and a compliment on her looks is the line she has already read twenty times.

If you have the right photos and a decent opener and the replies still do not come, that is the point to get someone else to look at your photos and your first messages honestly. A fresh pair of eyes finds in ten minutes what you have missed for a month.
