Most men getting nothing from dating apps have quietly concluded it is a skill problem. They believe there is something other men know and they do not, some knack for photographs or opening lines, and that the absence of it is why the whole thing has gone silent.

That belief is worth testing, because it is usually wrong, and holding on to it sends you off to fix the wrong half for another year.

Section 01

Run the test on yourself

Take the parts of dating apps that genuinely need judgment and ask honestly whether you can do them.

Looking at two photographs of yourself, can you tell which one a stranger would prefer? Most men can, once they slow down and actually look. Can you read a woman's profile and work out whether you would get on with her? Of course you can. Can you write one sentence that sounds like you and refers to something she actually wrote? You write more difficult sentences than that before lunch.

Can you tell when an exchange is ready for you to suggest a drink? You can. You have known it several times this year. You know it because you can still remember the ones where you noticed and did nothing.

So you pass the judgment half. That is the half every article on this subject is about.

Section 02

Now the other half

Here is the part nobody sells a course on, because there is nothing clever in it.

Open the app today. Open it again tomorrow. Open it on the day the deal nearly fell over, on the Sunday your family is round, on the Thursday you got in at eleven. Answer four different women inside the hour rather than at the end of the evening, and do that for eleven days running. Notice that the woman from Monday has gone quiet and write to her anyway.

None of that needs any ability whatsoever. It needs attendance.

And you are not attending. That is the actual finding, and it has nothing to do with being bad at dating.

Section 03

Why it is capable men specifically who fail this half

The cruel part is that the better your job is, the worse you tend to be at the attendance half, and for reasons that have served you well everywhere else.

You work in bursts. You clear a thing properly and then you move to the next thing. That is a good way to run a career and a terrible way to run a dating app, because the apps do not reward a burst. They reward a metronome. A man who does twenty honest minutes on a Sunday night and nothing else has not done a week of dating apps. He has done a Sunday.

You also triage by consequence, all day, automatically. A message from a woman you have never met carries no consequence at two in the afternoon, so it goes to the bottom, every single time, correctly by the standards of your job and fatally by the standards of the thing you are trying to do.

Section 04

What she sees is not what you think she sees

From the other side there is no visible difference between a man with no charm and a man with no time. Both produce a reply two days later, if one arrives at all.

She cannot see the good sentence you drafted and left unsent, or the room with eleven people in it. Every bit of judgment you passed the first test on is invisible to her, because judgment only becomes visible once it is delivered on time.

So you get the results of a man who is bad at this, and you file that as evidence that you are.

Section 05

The loop gets tighter each time round

Then the wrong diagnosis does its damage. You conclude the problem is skill, so you go and buy skill.

You come back with a better profile and the same calendar, put in nine good days, get less than you hoped, and the story hardens. Now you are a man who is bad at this and has tried. That is a much harder thing to talk yourself out of than the original version.

Section 06

There are only two honest ways out

The first is to become a man who attends. It means a genuinely fixed slot most days, defended like a meeting, plus a second short look in the evening, and it means doing it in the weeks when work is horrible, because those are the weeks that decide it. Some men can do this. If you are one of them, do that, and do not pay anybody for anything.

The second is to accept that the attendance half is not going to come from you, and to have somebody else do it. That is not an admission about your character. It is the same arrangement you already use for every other recurring job you are capable of doing and do not have the hours for.

Section 07

What the daily half looks like when it is somebody's job

That is what the Online Dating Concierge is. Our team redoes your dating photos and your whole profile, then runs the apps for you every day, on every app you want to be on, against the standards you set. Interest gets read against what you actually want rather than everything the app puts in front of you, conversations get carried while they are still warm, and the asking gets done rather than postponed. When your schedule or your location changes, the way it is run changes with it. What lands on you is an evening on your calendar. The promise is your first date within a week, or we keep working.

The judgment half stays yours, because it always was. You show up and you are the same man she was talking to.

Section 08

The question to ask before you buy anything else

Not whether you are good at this. You already know you can read a profile and write a sentence.

Ask how many of the last thirty days you actually opened the app on, and whether the next thirty are going to look different. If the honest answer is nine and probably not, another round of self improvement will not touch it. If you would rather the daily half simply happened, see if you qualify and we will tell you whether the Online Dating Concierge is the right fit.
