Tinder's help center has no account state called locked. The states it documents are a hidden profile, an account under review, a warned account, a suspended account and a banned account. The first job is to work out which of them you are in. The most common one by far is a hidden profile, which is fixed by adding a clear photo of your full face.

The five states Tinder documents

When a man says his profile is locked, he usually means one of these: hidden, under review, warned, suspended or banned.

Tinder's pages we read give the details for three of them. Hidden means Tinder has not, or cannot, detect a valid face photo, so other people cannot see you. Suspended and banned each come with an email and a notification when you log in, and both can be appealed. The two in between, under review and warned, are named in Tinder's list without a fix attached, so this article does not guess at them.

The name of the state matters because each one has a different fix. If Tinder sent you an email or a login notification, read it first, since that is where it says which state applies.

Hidden is the one you can fix tonight

A hidden profile is one where Tinder has not or cannot detect a valid face photo. While you are hidden, other people on Tinder cannot see you, so nobody new finds you.

Tinder says that while hidden you cannot use features such as Likes, Super Likes, Boost or Super Boost. You can still get into Settings, and you can still chat with people you already matched with.

Tinder's fix is to add a clear, well-lit photo of your full face. The face should not be covered by a mask, a hand or a phone, and the photo has to follow the Community Guidelines. That rules out the classic mirror selfie, where the phone hides half of the face you are trying to show.

If your photo meets those requirements and you are still hidden, Tinder says to contact its support team. Do not keep deleting and re-adding the same picture. Tell support that the photo meets the requirements and the profile is still hidden.

Suspended means a wait, and you can appeal

A suspended account gets an email and a notification when you log in. Tinder says the person can return to Tinder in 6 months. A suspension can be appealed through the Appeal Center.

If you think the suspension was a mistake, use the Appeal Center and say so plainly. Give the facts: what you did, what you did not do, and why you think it was wrong. A calm, short appeal reads better than an angry one.

Banned is the most serious state

A banned account also gets an email and a notification at login. Tinder says the person cannot keep using Tinder or make new accounts, and can appeal from the Appeal Center if they think the ban was a mistake.

There is no workaround worth trying here, and none that Tinder describes. Do not spend a week trying to get around it. If you believe it was wrong, appeal through the Appeal Center and wait for the answer.

Why a clean photo matters even when you are not locked out

Most men who search for this phrase have a hidden profile and a photo problem at once. The photo that failed Tinder's check is often the same photo that gets passed over by women.

When a woman cannot see a man's face clearly, she does not assume the best. She assumes there is a reason. Sunglasses in every shot, a cap pulled down, a group photo where she has to guess which one is you: each reads as hiding.

a dating coach's advice is to get the best photos you can before anything else, since photos get the first look and the words come second. A plain, recent photo of your face with an easy expression is rarer than it should be, which is your advantage.

Fix the bio and build the rest of the page around it

Once your face photo passes, put it first. Then let the other photos do different jobs. One shows you somewhere you really spend time. One shows you with friends, as long as she can tell which one is you. One shows you doing something you do.

Then fix the bio. a dating coach says it needs to stand out and needs to be clear, and that a bio that is merely acceptable gets lost. Replace a list of good qualities with one specific detail from your life that she could picture and ask about.

A friend with a phone and an hour of daylight can take most of what you need. Take plenty and keep the few where you look relaxed.

The short version

Tinder has no locked state. Check which of the five you are in. If you are hidden, add a clear, well-lit photo of your full face with nothing covering it, and contact support if it still will not clear. If you are suspended or banned, use the Appeal Center. Then use the fix as a reason to improve the whole profile.
