When dating after divorce does not work, it is usually for one of five reasons. You started before the marriage was really behind you, you carried the old habits into new dates, you are out of practice, your life has no room for someone, or you are choosing people the wrong way. Each one is fixable once you know which it is, and the first step is to look at where your dating actually breaks.

Start with where it breaks

"It is not working" covers very different problems.

If you are not getting dates at all, the trouble is at the start: how you meet women, how you come across, or how often you try. If you get first dates and no second ones, the trouble is in the room. If you get a few good weeks and then it falls apart, it is usually habits or fit.

Write down your last five or six tries and mark where each one ended. Most men see the same spot three or four times. That spot is the thing to work on, and it saves you from trying to repair everything at once.

You started before you were done

Some men are back on dates within weeks, mostly to prove something or to fill the quiet. It rarely goes well.

The tell is how you talk about the marriage. If the story gets longer when you tell it, or your voice changes when your ex comes up, the woman across the table hears it. She is not judging that you were married. She is noticing that you are still arguing with someone who is not there.

If that is you, you do not have to stop dating. You do have to keep it light, keep first evenings short, and put some of your effort into settling the marriage in your own head, with a friend, a counselor or time.

The old habits came with you

Ten or twenty years in a marriage trains you. If you were the fixer, you will drift toward women who need fixing. If you went quiet in conflict, you will go quiet on the third date when something feels off. If you did whatever kept the peace, you will agree to everything and wonder why nobody finds you interesting.

Ask yourself what you did in your marriage that you would not want in a new one. Then watch for it in the first month of seeing someone. You will usually catch it fast, because you have lived with it for years.

Men also tend to jump into relationship mode. They treat a second date as though they are already a couple, with the calls and the planning and the long talks about the future. That is a lot to put on a stranger, and it makes a woman back away.

You are out of practice

If you have not been on a first date in ten years, you will be rusty, and the world is different. Meeting people, flirting, texting, asking someone out and handling a no are all skills, and skills fade.

The fix is volume at low stakes. Talk to more people in ordinary places. Go on more coffee dates with no outcome attached. Expect the first handful to be awkward and treat them as practice, because they are.

Men who date once a month and put everything on that one evening usually get nowhere. Men who meet people regularly and keep each one light improve quickly, because they get feedback.

Your life has no room in it

Women look at what else is going on in your life. If you work all week, your kids fill your weekends, you see no friends and your only plan is to find a partner, you have little to offer except need.

Build a week she could imagine joining. A gym routine, a hobby, friends you see, a place you like, a day with your kids that you enjoy. That makes you more attractive, and it also makes you less afraid of a bad date, because your life does not depend on it.

Logistics matter too. If you cancel twice because of custody or work, a woman you have met once will drop the idea. Know which evenings are truly yours and offer those.

You are choosing the wrong way

After a divorce, many men say yes to anyone who is warm toward them. That feels good and leads to a few months with someone who wants something different.

Slow down and decide what you actually want. A serious relationship, something casual, or just company? Then say it early and ask her the same. It filters out a lot of wasted time, and most women respect the honesty.

What to change this month

Pick one thing. If you are not getting dates, meet more women in more places and ask more of them out. If dates end after the first, shorten your divorce story to two sentences and ask her more about her life. If it falls apart after a few weeks, slow your pace and watch your old habits.

One change, held for a month, tells you more than a dozen changes at once. And keep going, because dating after divorce is mostly a matter of getting back into practice, not of finding some trick you missed.
